The oddest date yet?

Chalk up the date I had this afternoon to the most, uh, unusualoddfunny… I can’t think of the right word for it. I’m still laughing, actually. Here’s how it went!

The guy calls me and leaves me a message at 12:30 to say he’s leaving from Abbotsford, and he’s on his way. We’ve set up the date for 1:30 at the Cactus Club near Ikea. I arrive right on time, and am standing around for a few seconds when I hear from behind me — “Tanya?” — I turn around, and there’s my Mom, and Diane (my brother’s girlfriend) sitting there waiting for a table. Firstly, that was already pretty strange, because they never come out that way to eat as it’s totally out of the way for both of them.

I explain that I’m waiting for a date to show, and they laugh… What are the chances? Will this guy think I’m a complete freak because perhaps I set it up that they’re at the same restaurant to check him out? hahah… Unlikely, but a remote possibility, right?

They get seated, and my date is still not there — Five minutes late at this point. I’ll usually give someone 15 minutes, before deciding to leave. But, remember, he’d called to say he was on his way, and should be early and not late? Then, because the restaurant is so loud, I don’t hear my phone ring — I guess it’s gotta be him, but the number doesn’t register. I didn’t even think to bring his number with me… but, thankfully I have a really good memory for numbers, and recall it from dialing it the other night. I get him on the phone to learn that he’s at the OTHER Cactus Club on Lougheed, (even though I did make it pretty clear the one I meant the other day, but I guess he forgot). He says he’s on his way, so I tell him that I’ve run into my Mom and Diane, so I’ll go and sit with them.

He shows up, and I invite him to come and join us at the table before they leave for shopping… And then it dawns on me… He’s gonna feel pretty weird about that, but at this point, I just shrug, and throw him into the thick of it anyhow! :) He’s a good sport, but does say, so… this is when I get the grilling, eh? Am I going to be completely barbequed, or just a little grilled? LOL! I just can’t stop laughing from this ridiculous situation — My MOTHER and Diane, spending the first few minutes of a FIRST date with me… Too funny.

It wasn’t long before those two left for shopping, and I was able to get to know him a bit better without the extra company. It was a fun date, and I thought it worked out well, despite the awkwardness of it all. This will be one date to remember, anyhow.

Last night was great! Vern, Zoe and I went up to the Jupiter Room for a few drinks and lots of yacking… I’d never been there before! What a cool place — I need to go there more often. Too bad there weren’t more eligible men there, though. (read: not enough eye candy! haha!) I was getting pretty tired when we left at 10:40 or so, and dropped of Zoe at home. While on the way home I called back Deetria who had called earlier, and she suggested that we go out for a bit, and so Vern and I dropped by to pick her up on the way back home.

Okay, so this is where I went wrong… I agreed to go to Boone County — A country bar near my place — Because Deetria likes it there. Yuck! I can’t believe they played a country version of an ACDC song. What were they thinking??? Blasphemy! It’s always fun out with Deetria, but I don’t want to go to that place again. Just say no.

So, that’s my weekend so far. I’m trying to figure out what to do tonight. I’d like to go and burn off a bit of steam somewhere, but so far I don’t have too many people available to join me! That firefighter guy from a few weeks back did call and leave a message asking what I was up to tonight. Hmmm… it’s an option, anyhow. I should call him back, anyhow. I’m just a little miffed because Dee and I saw him last Friday at the Foggy Dew and he didn’t even recognize me — So, he didn’t say hello, and I wasn’t going to be a dork and walk up to him and say, hi, remember me? Call me old fashioned?

Anyhow — Strange day, hey? I wonder how tonight’s going to go?

[covers face in shame] LOL! Yes, I shoulda known about Boone County, but I was trying to be the nice, accomodating friend. Riiiiight. No. There’s no reason to subject anyone to that sorta pain. :)

Yes, I really liked Jupiter — Neat, comfy atmosphere with very outgoing service. I’ll definately be hitting that place again!

I guess you’ll be happy with school almost over soon, hey? Yay!

I fear country bars, and not just for the ‘cowboys and indians’ factor…the 2 or 3 I’ve been to have had aggressive women in them as well as some frighteningly synchronized dancing. I played in a country bar too and it was all too scary. I’d elaborate but it’s a long story…

Oh Harp, that’s not fair! You can’t elude to a story like that, and not tell it!!!

Hey Tanya… I’m a big fan of the Jupiter and a not so big fan of Boone County myself. So what’s the deal with the firefighter guy? What city is he from… maybe I know him.

  • NetChick says:

Hey Sandy! “firefighter dude” is from Burnaby… Someone I met a little while ago at the Foggy Dew.

We should hit the Jupiter Room sometime! Reading your blog, I know we’d have a laugh exchanging single-chick-in-the-city stories. :) Come to think of it, Col has some pretty funny stories too, if I recall?

ps: I forgot to tell you, Sandy, your Halloween costume was brilliant!
