What’s a regatta without the drama??
Seriously. It’s as if we simply can’t have one without the other.
Jer and I drove down to Seattle on Friday night — I was delirious from being so exhausted due to a severe lack of sleep during the week. The worst night was Thursday night when I worked about 20 hours that day. If I had been more effective at problem-solving a very, very long SQL query, that never would have happened… But, it did.
Despite my exhaustion, though, Jeremy and I decided to head out to catch up with some of the rowers about 25 minutes up the road at the ‘Cheesecake Factory’… Great food! By the time we got back to our room, Jer crashed. I was so overtired by that point, though, that I couldn’t sleep even though I did have a beer with dinner, and a glass of wine before we left for dinner. Leno had me laughing anyhow.
5:15am came very quickly for us — Yes, only four hours sleep for me that night, and not much more for Jer. I was so grumpy that I even frightened myself with my tone of voice as we left the hotel. I was cooked. The weather was horrendous, and when we got to the launch site at Lake Washington, we could barely see in front of us to start unloading the boats. Finally, I was so soaked that I went back to the car to warm up, because there wasn’t anything left for me to do — None of the novices had arrived yet. When I went back to watch Jeremy’s race at 8am, I was surprised to see he hadn’t changed yet… The small boat races had been cancelled. The swells were just too high, and the wind was picking up by the minute.
Jer was scheduled to race two races that day, and both in small boats (his own single, and a double with Corree’s boyfriend D.) Since the 8s had been postponed or cancelled, there was no need for me afterall, which was very dissapointing. We left to go to Jer’s Seattle office so that he could do a little work while he was down there.
Sue, who was scheduled to row with her crew in an 8, stayed. Read about details of her race in the horrific conditions here: (Click here) And, CONGRATS to Corree & crew for coming in first place in their race. You guys rock!
Finally getting home at 6:30pm that evening, all I wanted to do was shower and veg in front of the tv… So that’s what we did. Junkfood and all. It was absolutely delightful for a change.
Photos to follow tomorrow.
