Friday Five

  1. Who was your first best friend?
My first best friend was Elyssa Durban, my next door neighbour when I was 6 in Victoria. She was a year older than me, and I looked forward to spending time after school at her place playing board games on the floor in the basement while Gilligan’s Island played in the background. I wasn’t allowed to watch much tv at home, so that was a real treat. I also have fond memories of popping the ashphalt in the summer in front of our houses — I was six! It was fun… Although my Mother didn’t enjoy cleaning up my clothes afterwards. I looked her up years later, when I was about 15 I think, but we’d both changed so dramatically, that we no longer had anything in common. I still find it odd how close friends can drift apart, especially as adults.
  2. Who have been some of the most influential people in your life?
My Dad and his wife Sharon — For showing me that true love does exist (They are my role models for what a remarkable relationship should look like)
Someone who shall remain nameless, because his name is kind of unique — He made charging realistic per hour rates for my work real. Until he showed me he could do it, I just didn’t believe it was real. It’s amazing how easily it is to achieve something when someone else you know shows it’s possible to do.
My third grade teacher — She showed me what true compassion is all about. Thank you Mrs. Burke. You left a lasting mark.
  3. Do you usually have one best friend or a lot of close friends?
Depends on where I am in life. I’ve often had one best friend in the past, and a lot of close friends, but at the moment, I have a lot of very close friends, but am sans a true best friend. I have a feeling that will soon change, though.
  4. Do you believe people of the opposite sex can be best friends and not lovers?
Absolutely — Vern has been a best friend in the past, and after our intimate relationship ended, we certainly didn’t go down that path as friends. I value having close male friends who won’t go there with me.
  5. Have you ever fallen in love with a friend?
No, it’s always happened the other way around for me. Lovers first, then friends. I don’t know why — That’s just how it’s worked out for me in the past.
