There’s nothing quite like the sweet, sweet smell of burning flesh…

…To start off a Monday morning.

For heaven’s sake, my luck with health this year has been somewhat lacking to say the least. I just can’t believe this year — I am wondering what I did in a previous life to deserve this?

On my long, long, long, loooooong, 1.5 block walk to work today (felt more like 10 miles), I decided that although I am practically on a first name basis with not just one but all four doctors at my clinic, I had better go and get this toe issue figured out. It kept me up again last night, regardless of the ibruprophen I took.

So, in I hobbled. Thankfully, the wait was minimal, and my doctor took a quick look at the toe and said, I had two options… Cauterize the flesh that had started to overtake my nailbed (it was treating the nail as a foreign body), or slowly push back the oozing flesh over a period of time. I said, just burn me. Get it over with so I can get on with my day.

I wasn’t prepared for the searing pain that came from the innocuous looking cotton swab that she jammed into that already very sore area of my toe. She looked back at me while smoke was wafting up from my big toe and said, “I told you it was going to hurt.” I think I was turning blue and purple all at the same time.

And then it was done. The flu shot was next, because, hey, why make another appointment for a quick shot. I didn’t even feel the jab, as my toe was still throbbing from the now blackened area. There’s pain management for you — Burn your toe so you are distracted!

She quickly scribbled up yet another prescription for antibiotics, and sent me on my hobbling way. Y’know — Extended medical would have been a good investment this year…

Lets hope the rest of my Monday goes better than this morning. How was everyone else’s Monday?
