Ghosts of Christmas past

My first post as a guest blogger! WEEEEEEEE

Well, I’ve been pondering about Christmas lately, now and growing up as a child.

Sadly I remember very few of them from my childhood, I don’t really know if that’s a common thing(age related or otherwise) or if I’ve blocked stuff out. I do know I have a poor recollection of a lot of my childhood, mostly due to I remember not enjoying it very much. Lately though, things have been coming back, the good parts of it reminding me that it wasn’t all bad.

Anyhow, I look around seeing the toys kids are getting these days and wonder: Will they stand the test of time, will a child hang on to a specific toy until adulthood? Which brings me to this, I still have my teddy bear, don’t know why I’ve hung onto it all these years(even through my teen years I hung on to it) but today it still sits on my bedside table keeping me company. I never gave him a name, always just was ‘the teddy bear’. I remember getting him as a child, the fur all there, the eyes still attached, no rips and all the stuffing intact. Today he’s not looking so good, but there is a charm about him that keeps me hanging on to him.

My old bear

Do any of you still have any of your childhood toys, any memories around them?

Does (could) anyone actually throw or give away their teddy bear?! When I die, thats the only thing I expect I will still own from all the posessions I have today.

OMG that looks just like Ted! My ex has (I don’t speak to him but I’m sure he still has it) a bear that looks just like this. Ted’s eyes and nose have been replaced a couple of times and the fur has been “loved” right off just like this one. As a matter a fact, Ted has a fur jump suit to protect the remaining fur that is left.

I still have my teddy bear, given to me by my dad when I was 3 or 4. She’s slightly wooly (made of sheep skin) and stuffed with straw. She’s seen 4 nose replacements, 3 arm repairs and countless bad moments. She has all the clothes my mom made her. I ought to get rid of her, but instead I’ve got her safely tucked away, wrapped in tissue until the day I get her cleaned and restuffed.

My sister had a Shirley Temple doll that I, at age 9, shaved the head of, and drew scars on the face and braces on the teeth. Of course, for the next 25 years, all I heard was that this doll was a collectors item and my sister could send her daughter to college with what she could have sold it for if I had not disfigured it. Well, I just checked on eBay and I can buy her exact doll for 20 bucks. I hope my niece isn’t hoping to go to a fancy college!

I had a pile of teddy bears when i was a kid but then I figured that was sissy girl stuff so I totally replaced them with Star Wars spaceships and laser guns and stuff.

Ok, I kept one, I admit it, ok? is that so wrong?! Geesh! (he was later adopted by my niece and lived a fullfilling life.)

I have a teddy bear that looks quite a bit like yours. I got him when I was just 2 months old (35 years ago), and he still sits on the corner of my bed. He’s lost his eyes, nose and mouth, his fur is flat, and he’s been re-stuffed several times…but he’s still awesome. ;)
