What’s the deal with Friday the 13th?
Since it is Friday and Tanya isn’t here, I figured I should keep some of her customs alive, so welcome to Friday silliness. Okay, so it might not be as silly as she can make it, but i promise it will be educational (and i hear a chorus of yippees from the crowd)
The Origins of Friday the 13th
Can you believe there are actually websites dedicated to this information? Haha, I’m talking to people who live their lives on the net so that was a dumb question.
Fun Fact 1: Someone with an irrational fear of Friday the 13th is called a paraskevidekatriaphobe.
Fun Fact 2: Yes, you guessed it, this day has religious overtones. Primarily that Fridays are a big deal in pagen and christian beliefs and it seems that Fridays were actually called Hangman’s Day in Britain as that was the day people were executed for crimes committed.
Fun Fact 3: Women have 13 menstrual cycles in a year. How does this have anything to do with Friday the 13th being a scary day? You would be amazed at how twisted some conclusions can become, kind of like a century long game of telephone.
Fun Fact 4: It was on Friday, Oct. 13, 1307, that France’s King Philip IV had the Knights Templar rounded up for torture and execution.
Fun Fact 5: So much rain is falling in Vancouver right now that people are actually being told to evacuate their homes for fear of floods and mud slides. And, we just passed the half way point of the biblical rain fall of 40 days and 40 nights.
But even with all that heaped on this day, I couldn’t be happier. It’s Friday! And I like the number 13. It was my soccer jersey number and has never done me wrong.
So what’s your favorite number and why?

hey! if you had cramps like mine then you wouldn’t be calling us *irrational* paraskevidekatriaphobes
I like 9. Because if you add up the numbers for any multiple of 9 is equals 9. (9*2=18 AND LOOKOUT 1+8=9).
Yep… I was a *huge* “MathNnet” fan
you watched mathnet too? oh wow, thank goodness there is someone else out there. i try to describe the show to other people and they all think i’m crazy. i loved that show. mathman, and all the games. okay, i’m something of a math geek myself and proud of it gosh darn it.
Umm…. 13.
It’s a family thing – we like the number, and it’s served the women who of my family well. Plus, I got married on Friday the 13th over 7 years ago. 13 brings me luck, as does 6 (my birthday)
Fav number is 34.
I got my postcard from Tanya today in the mail (from Germany)! Very nice of her to send that.
Hope you’re having a great time, T! See ya soon!
Hey all you Vancouver people. I just left your beautiful city today and am now back home in Florida. I was hoping to have a cold one with the famous NetChick while I was there but world travel fun always comes first.
Anyway, 5 days of rain and low hanging clouds sure made sight-seeing difficult. Maybe next time I’ll come in the summer, eh?
My favorite part was going to watch the Canucks kick some Maple Leaf ASS!!! What a great time.
So Tanya, hope you are having a wonderful time!!
Yesterday was the best day I had for a long time. Hurray for Friday the 13th.
12. Been my favorite since I was 9 or 10 — all the good cartoons were on KVOS channel 12. I no longer watch much TV at all, but the number stuck. So far, it’s done well by me.
