Caution: Whining post about web design

Y’know, I thought I was done with all this cross-browser compatibility shit when Netscape all but disappeared. Now, I’ve got two other piles of crap on my hands (don’t worry, I shall wash them afterwards) — Mozilla’s Firefox and IE6 CSS2 standards compliancy differences, not to mention the upcoming release of Internet Explorer 7 and CSS3.

I’m not going to get into a debate here as to why almost 20% of the browsing public is now using Firefox. I’m not one of them. I *have* to have Firefox installed to test and develop for, because 20% of the surfers out there will have a completely messed up experience if I don’t keep them in mind when creating new sites.

But, I’m telling you… I’m really, really sick and tired of design hacks, and it’s only going to get worse with the lack of backwards compatibility when a ton of users migrate to IE7.

I’m already pulling out my hair. With the onset of IE7 use, I’ll be bald. And, guys, that’s not a pretty sight.

Keep up the diligent work. Without wonderful folks that CAN figure it out, the rest of us are just in cyber-limbo. Thank you for your service to our cyber country :)

Bald and covered in bleach? Oh wait, clearly I’m reading backwards now. ;)

First, Fire Fox Rules! Not having pop-ups and other “MS” directed spam has being a life long dream here. As far as making all browsers happy–wait until you try and validate everything to make the WWW3.org prople happy. In the end, I just make Fire Fox happy on my site, and try to make IE presentable. The People who use IE will have to suffer with lop sided padding and miss placed measurments in my CSS.

But, I realy like your site, not becuase it so nice, pretty or well made–your are funny, sad, happy and a hoot to read. I like the content here, and that you are in my local area.

    Keep up the good work!
    :)

    PS

The Gravatar bug finly hit you eh? ;)

You’ll be happy to know that bald chicks are hot. :)

    long live firefox!

I believe you were looking for the words: “Thank You, Rog” for compatability testing your site (and finding a bug).

That’s okay. QA rarely gets the kudos they deserve.

And yes, IE7 should provide a whole mess of CSS hacks in th future. Ahh, the joys of coding.

    PS
    Yeah for Firefox!

Oh my! Please don’t pull all your hair out! It’s too beautiful to lose all of it. I feel your pain. I still use blogger because I can’t seem to understand how to use typepad. Not a neophyte at all , but good grief nothing stands still!

Hey Roger! About 300 QA guys here at my work would totally agree with you… they get no respect *sigh*

  • Roger says:

That’s what eventually lead to my leaving software development.
    No respect.

    lol
OK, that wasn’t really it. I just wanted to fly.

Btw, you said 300 QA? Where do you work, EA?
Cripes that’s alot of bug hunters.

I love the new design, Tanya. It looks great. However I agree with you regarding baldness. A redesign of your physical look to include baldness is a bad idea. LOL Maybe a change of profession is in order here. We don’t want you pulling your hair out!

I’ve been coding for browsers recently, and I can’t wait till I’m back to systems programming. The constant hacks are really driving me nuts. That said, I’ve found that IE requires way more deviation from standards (CSS, javascript, you name it) than Firefox does. Coming from a non-web-programming background, it’s very frustrating to read a spec but not be able to implement anything based on it.

It’s a lot more than 20% for Firefox. Where ever that number came from it was wrong. I was a die hard IExp user for nine years but I switched about a year ago. I use IExp to test sites, sometimes.

When did you last try Firefox? It is hugely different from where it was a couple of years ago. I thought IExp was trouble free and simple but Firefox is better. Plus I love the tabbed browsing now that I have gotten used to working with it.
