Quick observations on moving!

FREEKIN’ THANK GOD IT’S FRIDAY!

Hope everyone else had a great Friday night! Mine wasn’t so bad, after…

Point form observations on today:

  1. Waking up at 6:30am isn’t a good way to start a moving day. Get a good night’s sleep. Period. (Take sleeping pills if you have to.)
  2. Having a meltdown at 8am isn’t a good way to say goodbye to your partner, before he goes to work, and you finish your packing: Also known as shrink-wrapping of leftover shit, and generally trying to find a way to feel good about your organizational skills, or lack of them. (I tried sooo hard to be prepared.)
  3. Trying to backpedal at 8:10am when your partner should be well on their way to work, is simply a bad idea.
  4. What’s a good idea, though, is going for coffee and making the day right at 8:30am — Your sig-other will appreciate you taking the time in your extremely hectic day to show them you really aren’t the true spaz you appeared to be an hour ago.
  5. Don’t hire movers (sorry Al) on a friend’s recommendation, without a written quote in hand.
  6. Because, said mover will take advantage of you. (*I should have taken my own advice a year ago*)
  7. Make sure you know the mover’s intentions, before watching them drive right past your driveway, and on to some unknown destination… I waited almost 20 minutes before calling my mover in a panic — I watched him drive RIGHT by my driveway to my new place at the time he said he’d be coming by… Very scary when you don’t see him actually turning around to come back. (He decided to just take a break without letting me know.)
  8. I have an amazing vantage point from the 28th storey.
  9. From my past and present experiences, I have concluded that movers are generally twits. …Twits paid about $90 an hour.
  10. My movers don’t know how to operate a FOB, and waited 20 minutes on my dime to get in my building.
  11. Oh, did I mention, get a written quote? Written down on paper?
  12. Ya.
  13. Make sure you make firm plans with friends to go out for copious drinks on your moving night.
  14. Have a partner who’s extremely sympathetic to your day, and your many, many issues during the move.
  15. Man, I’m a lucky girl.
  16. Don’t order cable/internet from freaks who can’t even hook up the systems without having to make a return call.
  17. Have many X-Box games on hand to unwind with after the fact.
  18. Play said X-Box games with friends and your Sweetie while intoxicated. It makes it all better. No question.
  19. Moving into a beautiful place with the most amazing sunset makes the $700 moving expense almost fade away.
  20. Almost.
  21. Having your sig-other demand to pay for part of your ass-screwing really, really makes the move a distance memory.

Have a really fantastic weekend, everyone! I’ll be unpacking, and, maybe heading to a houseparty tomorrow night if my back doesn’t completely freek out on me.

Did you just say that your significant other paid for half of your ass-screwing. Wow. You guys are kinky.

Glad everything went well. Your list is hilarious – and oh so true on so many levels. I’ve saved it locally and will read it again before our inevitable eventual move.

Paul, Rog says… How original is your gravatar? Heheh… Sorry, I love stirring shit. I gotta when I’m sitting here with my laptop while they’re playing your X-Box. What else can I do?

And, no… Not half, but it was a very generous amount off my original total.

Heheh… Thanks, Carmi! I’m glad you liked my entry!

  • Very funny list and I don’t ever intend to move again, ever ever ever!!!

I’m sorry that the movers weren’t very “user-friendly”, Tan. I’ve always had good luck with them but I use local companies and they always seem a lot better than national ones. Of course the least expensive thing to do is rent a van and hire hourly folk that tend to gather around convenience stores.

Thanks for the tips Tanya, and I’m glad it’s now over for you. We’ll be moving in about 5 weeks, and are doing it ourselves.. just for a lot of the reasons you mentioned. Still… it’s always alot of prep, and hard work eh? Enjoy your new view! :)

  • NetChick says:

Hey Lis… Thanks for stopping by! Man, I’m so sorry I haven’t called you or emailed you back yet. No excuses! I’ll see if I can set some time aside tonight to give you a call once I finish cleaning and clearing out my old place. We definitely want to catch up with you and Rob and the kids really soon.
    …Good luck with packing!
