One down…

…One to go.

I’m basically finished. I unpacked my last box today, cleaned my old place with my Sweetie’s help, and just have some re-organizing to do of all my crap, so that when Michael finishes his end of the move in the next few days, he’ll have some space to integrate his belongings.

And speaking of integration: I have to say, it’s just not easy merging homes. Obviously, we’re not clones, so our tastes do differ somewhat with decorating and organization. I can admit it: I’m anal, and like things super organized without clutter around me. Michael isn’t far off of that, but his needs are different, and we’re trying to find compromises in our differences. We’re certainly making progress…

So, tell me… Is it just me? Does everyone go through this when they move in with the one they love? A famous on-going storyline in “When Harry Met Sally” comes to mind (the wagon-wheel coffee table), so I’m thinking this must be pretty standard fare. Maybe other people just don’t worry as much as I do. Mind you, Michael is an extremely laid back guy, and even he’s pretty passionate about being surrounded by his books — hundreds of them.

I’m not worried anymore, though. I know we’ll find a balance, and we’ll both end up feeling like this is home. I actually can’t wait for him to have his things all here, so that he feels like this is his space, too.

And, freekishly enough… “House and Home” just came on TV, and tonight’s episode is on “Minimalism” — Interesting timing!

OH man, now I just look lazy. You are finished unpacking ?!?!?! I’ve been here since Jan. 15th and I STILL have boxes to unpack!

    Ugh.

    PS
Modified my last post. Something was missing.

Roger: Phew, I was starting to feel like a right loser for being here a whole two weeks already and still not being totally unpacked. In my defense, normally I’m pretty well unpacked within the first few days, but “integration” is tricky.

And Tanya: Yes, integrating two households is a right bitch. Rich & I are both total control freaks… and he’s like you in the complete lack-of-clutter, whereas I want my things around me. For example, it’s DRIVING ME BATTY that my books are all still in boxes, because he’s building me new bookshelves. (Yeah, I know, how ungrateful am I? My books are still in boxes because I’m getting beautiful, handmade bookshelves and I’m JUST NOT SATISFIED. Right. Shut up, Donna.)

Anyhoo… yeah, we’ve been totally at each others throats for two weeks, and it’s just starting to calm down now. Phew, I was starting to get worried. :)

So far, the biggest compromise has been on the closet space. The closet in our bedroom is tiny. I have a LOT of clothes. Rich has like, four t-shirts, two pairs of jeans, and a couple of work outfits.

Solution: The back room has a much, much larger closet. So, all my fetishy clothes and all of his clothes are there. The closet in our room is mine, Mine, MINE! And soon, it’ll even have shelves! Yaaay! Am happy. No longer have boyfriend trying to convince me that I have to fit my clothes into about 10 inches of hanging space. (The response to that was laughter. Long, drawn out, excessive laughter. 10 inches. Right.)

I like to tell Paul to throw things out. That’s my solution. ;) No actually it is kind of hard but we just end up having a cluttered household because we both have too much stuff. Maybe have some sort of compromise sort of thing- you pick on thing for me to get rid of and I’ll pick something of yours … or you decorate this wall, I’ll do that one. Problem is you really have to accept what they chose or do. ;)

    Best of luck with it!

it’s a common thing, but at least you don”t have a wagon wheel table. or do you????

failing that, I’m sure you could buy one of these lovely seating arrangements. http://urbanbarn.com/winners.php

Well i have never lived with a boy before but I can see the total control freak in me coming out. I like to have things my way… I guess i will have to bite the bullet when that day comes and learn that compromise thing i hear about.

We are dealing with some of the same. Most of my stuff is not here yet, but I am sure it will get interesting when we get to “our” place. Congrats on the speedy unpacking!
