Pssst! Wanna free cell phone?
Blogging has a ton of advantages… It’s enriched my life in so many ways, and has even lit the path to finding my true Sweetheart (for those of you who don’t know, Michael and I met through blogging). Today, I can happily report one more cool advantage to sharing my world online with all of you! I’m getting a brand new Nokia phone, complete with a ton of sweet accessories, for free!! Woohoo!
Let me explain how! Mel dropped me a line this morning to let me know that Matchstick was looking for bloggers for a new Rogers/Nokia promotion… Thanks Mel! After receiving her email, I contacted Yvonne, who had previously contacted me a few months ago about a similar campaign and let her know that I was still interested in their viral marketing approach, and would love to participate. We talked while I was at lunch, and my phone is on it’s way!
So, I thought I’d share the wealth! Here’s Yvonne’s email and contact info… If you qualify, you should definitely contact her!
I work for a word of mouth marketing company called Matchstick and I’m looking to give away brand new multimedia smart phones to a number of qualified individuals [snip]. Please have a look at the criteria and feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.I am looking for existing Rogers customers who meet the following criteria:
- Hosts a popular blog with 400+ hits a day
- A current Rogers cell phone subscriber (phone only supported with the Rogers network)
- Between the ages of 22-35
- Keeps his/ her blog updated on a regular basis with pictures and video
- Very socially active
We think you will thoroughly enjoy this product and its features, and if you do, we would encourage you to talk about it. If you or someone you know fits these criteria we would love to hear from you!
Thanks for your time, I hope to hear from you soon.

I came here from Going Canuck and first I will say hello from Norway!
I’ve had my Nokia 6680 for almost a year and are very satisfied with it, especially for using it to illustrate my blog post from my daily life in the Nordic countries.
It doesn’t seams like you got one?
I’m one of the naysayers on the promotion. Interesting enough, but I *really* dislike my contact information being given out without asking first. Most people wouldn’t give out someones phone number without their permission, but for some reason, email addresses are fair game. Given that I use email infinitely more than the phone, I disagree with that.
Not a huge deal overall, but giving out contact info without permission is non-kosher in my books. :/
I’m too freaking old and I don’t get enough hits. At least I have a brand new Treo phone as consolation.
That is soo cool! You are a total superstar and deserve fun things like that. Have fun with the new gadget!
Damn – I meet all the criteria except for the hits – except for those odd days when the local news website links to me because of an interesting article – then I skyrocket from 50 hits/day to 800ish.
Ah well, my blog is only just over a year old – and my current cell phone serves me well. Next time, perhaps. Maybe by that time, it will be the new cell phone implant that does in your thumb and baby finger – Inspector Gadget-style.
you get over 400 hits a day? wow. you’re like… famous.
Waaay over! But, then again, I’ve been blogging for 8 years… And, I market (err, promote?) my site regularily through other sites which increase my hits, and ultimately increase the size of the community to which I am a regular contributor!
Famous? Nah… I just blab regularily about my silly life. Maybe it’s the occasional train-wrecks that keep people coming back to visit?
I think they might have overreacted a little, but Boris and Darren wrote about Matchstick at [here] and [here] They also participate in the comments at [here]
That said, I think Boris redeemed himself by arguing that Nokia doesn’t actually need to give away phones for buzz marketing: there are people who want to pay cold hard cash for the phones. I should know: I’m one of them, who just paid a lot more than I could really afford (I crossed off some discretionary purchases I had mentally made) for the N70 but since I don’t have a data plan, and neither can any Canadian currently, I can’t use it to its full potential. If Nokia were to talk to Rogers/Fido and give me a cheap data plan–no special deals, give the same price to everybody else–and I’ll give the phone a proper review!

P.S. they never contacted me (at least not directly, thought they thought that the Urban Vancouver email address had people from Toronto behind it), so yes, I’m a little bitter.
But in my defense, I probably would have said no since I had a better phone at the time anyway.
Hey Richard! Thanks for de-lurking, and commenting. I did see the ‘controversy’ on the other sites, although, I’m not sure I necessarily agree. I was contacted because someone gave Matchstick my name and blog — Not because they were spamming me. If others got multiple emails, well, I imagine it’s because multiple people got a heads up about these blogs.
I, for one, am thrilled to be included! And, Yvonne at Matchstick said specifically that she’s not looking for false entries, just honest ones about my experience with the phone and the service.
Oh, and yes… I agree that Rogers needs to do a LOT better with the data service. It’s been a big dissapointment for years now without any improvements in that area.
