Wine tasting… Mmmm!
I’m finally going to put it together! I’ve been talking about it for months, now…
Here’s my idea: I’m going to put a list together of about 30 different wines, and for those coming to the get-together at my place, you pick one of the wines to bring. I’ll supply all the cool cheeses, crackers and bread you can eat, as well as one or two really special wines to start the night off with.
I’m also going to have a door-type prize for the person that can pick out five types of wine, in a blind taste-test.
So, here’s my questions:
a) Would you like to be invited? (Everyone’s welcome!)
b) Even if you aren’t joining us, do you have any favourite wines I should include in the list?
c) If you are going to join in the fun that night, which night do you prefer… Friday or Saturday?
I’m thinking of holding it on the last weekend of February!

I’d love to go, T! I’ll let you know if I’m out of town that weekend on business shortly.
Let me think on the wine list, I might have a few to add!
I’d so love to come… but it’s an 8 hour drive for me. Let me get back to you…
You know we’ll be there
Fridays are better for us usually as it’s unlikely but we sometimes end up with last minute weddings, which are typically on Saturdays. It IS february though, so probably doesn’t matter.
Just let me know what to bring
a) Maybe. (everyone?)
b) Might I suggest the following (by increasing affordability):
i. 1990 Penfold Bin 95 [Grange Hermitage]
Syrah Shiraz, US$2400/magnum
*A $2400 magnum, eh? …ok, does the statement: “I can’t believe how much I drank last night” still apply? …inquiring minds really need to know.
ii. 1990 Leroy Gevery-Chambertin
Pinot Noir, US$290/bottle
*Only the price tag is pretentious with this one – but the reviews have been good.
iii. 2005 Mulderbosch Stellenbosch
[Steen] Chenin Blanc, US$180/bottle
*Hey you gotta have at least one white…
iv. 1999 Wolf Blass Platinum
Barossa Shiraz, US$90/bottle
*Everyone should try this one at least 5 or 6 times during their lifetime – it really does grow on you.
v. 2005 Yellow Tail Riesling
Riverina Riesling, US$5.39/bottle
*Just in case you forgot the lemon-flavoured mouthwash at home during your holidays
c) Saturday. [Fridays are usually reserved for martini parties.]
First of all, Rach and I would love to go if you have the space.
Second, 30 bottles in one evening in a lot. It’s hard to ‘taste’ 30 different varietals. Unless of course this is just an excuse to get bloato. And if it is, please see the First item.
Third, sometimes it’s cool just to mention the varietal or the region, or the country, and see what people turn up with. Mind you, you do risk people bringing the same wine. So you just ask people to be creative.
Anyway. My 2 cents.
Hmmm… Saturday is often a good day…
As for wines, I’d suggest a good valpolicella, or maybe some good campfiorino. Maybe a vino nobile?
I do believe Cin and I might like to participate in this crazy s’papanning. We’ll bring whatever you’d like – I think at this point our personal collection is around 20 VQAs, a Chateau de Sancerre Sancerre, and a bottle of Fergrove Unoaked Chardonnay. Can you tell I’m on a bit of a BC kick?
Friday night would most likely work best for us – Saturday is Hockey Night In Canada, and if the stinking Leafs are playing, you might wind up with Occulus all over your walls…
Well gosh Tanya… what a sweet offer of you to invite me to your home!!! I only see two minor problems with this one tho…
1) It’s about a 26 hour drive for me to get to Vancouver…
2) Wine makes me completely crazy… crazy as in obnoxios crazy
I would end up ruining your party!!
hehe… sounds like that will be a fun party for you and your friends tho!!
Tracey and I would be a firm ‘tentative’ in for the party… so long as it isn’t on Feb 24th as we have another committment.
My co-worker recommends “Red Ribbet” wine. It comes in a cool bottle with a lable that has a picture of a french frog on it complete with a french beret!
I’m totally in for a night of drinking wine & socializing. Sign me up!
You definitely need some Cremant(Alsacian Champagne)!
Really addictive …
