I *so* love kayaking!
Tonight was my third kayaking lesson, and first in the series of 8 lessons.
And, this time, I was in a fibreglass boat. Wow. Seriously! All frustrations with the plastic kayaks disappeared when I pushed myself out into the water tonight in the lighter-weight shell. It turned on a dime, and was so easy to maneuver and gain momentum.
Probably a little bit of my bliss had to do with the fact that I’m feeling much more confident out there, too.
I really love this sport! If you haven’t tried kayaking yet, and you live in a place that you can… You should!

I’m considering it. I do love the social aspects of dragon boating, but I do also remember having a good time in my own kayak, floating down whatever river that was in Bend, Oregon however many years ago that was.
Did you have one of those kayaks with the rudders you control with your feet?
so one post you are going blind and the other you’re out kayaking. you’ve missed a few stories in between.
Richard: I’m in an ocean kayak, currently doing my course at Jericho. (Ecomarine.com has some really great programs for beginners and advanced) — I doubt we’ll be dropping our rudders for most of the course, as they want us to be able to not rely on it. This way, if a rudder breaks somewhere on one of the remote islands, I can still get back home!
Shnewt: Ya, I know. I’m a bad blogger. I ended up having two issues with the one eye… Crazy! Iritis (thankfully it was caught relatively early!) and a cornial abrasion. Combined caused a great deal of pain, but within minutes of the steriod use, it was feeling much better!
Told yah, Tan! Kayaking rocks!
Both my boats are plastic and on the heavy side but I suspect I have more muscle than you so it’s not so bad. If I had more money I’d opt for the lightweight ones too.
Welcome to the sport and I hope you’re able to keep paddling often, Tan.
