It's the MID-WEEK Socializing Game!

It's the mid-week socializing game!Hey guys! It’s that time of the week, again… Time to socialize on the fly! (And, I’ll have one of those shots in the photo, please!)

Here’s how it works: I’ll start with a question, and the first person answers my question, and then asks a different question for the next person in the same comment.

I’ll start!

When was the last time you went swimming in the ocean?

  • Tawcan says:

Couple weeks ago down at Jericho beach. Some ppl I was with decided to jump in naked.

What was the last time you went hiking?

  • Welcome Tawcan! :)

A: It’s been a few weeks… And I can’t say it was serious hiking, either. I really need to get out more!

Q: Have you ever been kayaking? How about overnight?

  • hello Michelle sent me, and no, I haven’t been kayaking.
But we do try to take the canoe out a couple of times a week.
Ever cook and eat fish that you’ve caught?

  • BreadBox says:

I haven’t kayaked in umptyseventhreen years. And never overnight. (and swimming at the beach was last October — but we are going again next month, and I am looking forward to it!)

When you swim at midnight, where do you like the moon? Back on shore as a target, or out on the ocean so that you can see the shore in its light?

    N.

  • cynthia says:

no, i have never kayaked! canoed though, but not overnight.

what is your favorite beverage on a hot day?

  • leslie says:

    mango juice

Do you watch “So You Think You Can Dance”?

  • Okay… I’m hosting a dinner party, so didn’t get to the new authorizations! Welcome new visitors! I’ll answer you all, so no one is left out! :)

Ever cook and eat fish that you’ve caught?
A: Nope. I’ve fished many times, but sadly, I’ve not caught anything. Don’t I suck? :)

When you swim at midnight, where do you like the moon? Back on shore as a target, or out on the ocean so that you can see the shore in its light?
A: I’ve had the opportunity to jump into the ocean nearby many times (I live only 2 blocks from the Pacific… I love that!) and I can say I love seeing the moon in front of me reflecting on the ocean and lighting up the waves crashing in.

what is your favorite beverage on a hot day?
    A: An ice-cold Cosmo… Shaken, not stirred ;)

Do you watch “So You Think You Can Dance”?
A: I’ve never seen an episode, but then again, although I do have cable, I rarely watch broadcast tv other than the news. Why is it so addictive??

    And, my turn!

Q: How hot was it where you live today? (I got to the car at 5:15pm, and it was 37°C, or about 103°F!)

  • shnewt says:

A: Hmm… let’s see. yup, my office is still 19 C. Just the way I like it.

Q: Would you rather burn to death, or freeze to death?

  • Hannah says:

A: (delurks) I’d rather burn to death. Never felt good when I was cold! Plus I figure it’d be faster.

Q: Do you often cook from scratch? (I just made pumpkin pie from scratch today.) And what do you make?

  • Rachel says:

We went swimming in the ocean on the Great Barrier Reef last June! Winter there, but it was still in the 20′s :-)

Hmm – feeling like going back for a visit!

PS Freeze to death – I think it would be like being in Winnipeg in December and then you just fall asleep? I had mild hypothermia once (in Australia) and it was unpleasant, but I eventually warmed up (obviously).

  • Rachel says:

Oops – sorry I forgot to answer Hannah’s question for the game:

A: I used to cook from scratch all the time – baking and all. Does a roast chicken with veggies in a clay pot count? That was Sunday night’s dinner. Otherwise, the answer is choc chip cookies a couple of weeks ago. Kudos on the pumpkin pie, H :-) .

Q: Who has a good dentist in Downtown/Mt Pleasant area? Sorry for being so lame – my dentist moved to Richmond while we were away!

  • donna says:

    Rachel:

I see Dr Sean-Peter Sikorski at this clinic: http://www.langstonraymond.com/

I quite like it there. :)

If you could visit any country in the world… where would you go?

  • Al! says:

    All of them? :)

and on a travel related theme: If you had a motorbike, would you ride it to travel to other countries?

  • donna says:

hee, I like the way you think.

Motorbike: Well, I do, and yes, I would… mostly. There are probably some places I wouldn’t ride, depending on local laws and such. And other than the US and possibly Mexico, it’d be hard to get my bike TO such a place.

I’d totally rent ‘em somewhere, if I could also rent a good helmet that didn’t make me nervous and a leather jacket. :)

  • donna says:

oops, and for a question, sticking with the travel theme… who’s your favorite travel book publisher? (ie, lonely planet, frommers, etc.)

  • Rick says:

OMG, Donna… someone actually PUBLISHES books/mags like that?! I have never read one… ever. And I read just about anything/everything. Traveling should be an adventure, not planned out in detail!! (personal opinion, but it’s mine!).

Q: For the people in Vancouver… Are you excited about hosting the 2010 Olympics and planning on attending any of the events?

  • donna says:

planned out? Who said anything like that? That’s not what I read ‘em for. But they’re excruciatingly handy for learning about the area you’re in. :) The lonely planet books especially definitely don’t help you plan anything out in detail, other than “how to not get arrested” and “what sort of plugs you need” and such. :) Take a look at the lonely planet website for example… it’s fantastic!

  • Rick says:

ooOooOoo… well if they go into such great information as how not to get arrested while on vacation, I am going to go buy some then! I hate it when you get tossed in the slammer while on holiday.

  • donna says:

hehe, well, they warn you about such things that might be illegal that you wouldn’t think about otherwise… ie, “don’t wear camo prints in most of Africa” … apparently camouflage is limited to military only. :)

and porn is illegal in Zimbabwe (I care, because I’m going there in a month) so I’m making a point of wiping my laptop before I go. :)

  • LOL! You guys kill me… “Thrown in the slammer while on vacation” teeheheh!

    Oh, and hi Hannah! :D

A: I prefer Lonely Planet — They’re great for the little details.

Q: Have you ever been on a cruise? If so, where did you go? If many, which destination was your favourite? (I’ve been on 7 now, and trying to figure out if I’m going to do a Med cruise coming up as my 8th!)

  • Oh! oh! Bonus question…

I’m thinking of putting together a cool new contest for this blog! The last one was such a hit (even though the winners gifts are still sitting in my bedroom!! – Lara and Donna will hopefully finally get their Body Shop stuff this week, finally!) that I want to put together an even bigger, better contest! Got any contest ideas? (Seen any other cool blog contests out there?)

  • Rick says:

I have only been on one cruise… it was down in the Caribbean… 8 days and hit St. Martin, Martinique and Barbados. We went in early December and the weather was awesome. My girls loved the islands a LOT as they were able to go buy beer on their own and drink mass quantities on the beach… I told them I didn’t care how much they drank as long as I had a full beer in my hand the entire time we were on the beach… and of course they were assigned to be my beer runners.

I won’t even try to answer your bonus Q there T as the only blog I read is yours. Don’t you feel all special now??

  • Rick: :) …terribly!! :)

Rachel: I forgot to add earlier, that if you don’t have luck with Donna’s dentist, mine, Dr. Monica Monty in Coal Harbour, is truly awesome!

Anyone else want to take a stab at my bonus question?

  • Vern says:

Donna, you are picking one HELL of a time to hit Zim. Estimates are that the country is running at 10000% inflation and is on the verge of collaspe within the next 30 to 60 days. That will mean supply chains will fail, and desperation for survival will probably have an impact on your efforts. I certainly hope you are at least in the country side and not in Harare.

I reckon that you will have some fantastic stories to tell. Perhaps you should prime the local press before you leave, as you are in for a hell of an interesting time, with some fascinating stories Im sure.

I bow to your bravery… or, whatever the heck it is that is pulling you there.

  • donna says:

Yeah, I swore I’d stop reading the news about Zimbabwe so that I’d be as apolitical as possible… but crap, I can’t stop! It’s so freaking bizarre what’s going on there, and hey, I’ve never had a chance to closely watch an entire economy collapse before…

And yes, my flight lands in Victoria Falls, where I immediately travel 2 hours south to hang out in the bush for a month. I won’t be going anywhere near Harare. :)

Bravery? Naaah. I’m an adrenelaine junkie. I get off on this shit. ;)

  • Vern says:

I went on a cruise with you! Every place we stopped had some great things to see and do, and I liked them all for very different reasons. Aruba for the taxi tour to the sea bridge, the Dutch place… name escapes me right now… Curacao! for the town. Panama for the train and locks… that was probably my fave. Costa Rica was fun for the eco-tour and to see the country and its very warm people.

Q: What would you present to win the 25 Million dollar prize (as presented by Richard Branson from Virgin) for saving the world from global warming?

  • Tawcan says:

Earlier question about kayaking. Yes I’ve kayaked lots before and have gone on overnights. Two 7 day trips so far. Going overnight kayaking this weekend. :)

Answer to Vern’s Q: Some industry process that allow companies to recycle 99.9% of all computer parts. Takes a lot of energy (mainly electricity) to produce computers. Recycle parts will certainly help the fight against global warming.

Q: What’s the last book you read?

  • Very cool, Tawcan! I’m trying to decide whether or not to blow off my daytrip kayaking on the 29th (which I’ve been looking forward to as it’s the final class of my 8 week kayaking course) to go to BlogHer in Chicago at the last minute, which might be the perfect quick getaway for me right now. Tough choice. I really love kayaking!

A: “Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim” by David Sedaris — And now, because I loved that book so much, I’m listening to the narrated version before bed each night. Hearing David tell the stories is such a fun way to experience his adventures. :)

Q: Along the same theme… Who’s your favorite author?

  • Patricia says:

    A. Ray Bradbury

    Q. What’s your favourite foreign (non-north american) soft drink?

  • P says:

To the motorcycle question….. I would love to ride Europe on my own bike. I have ridden some of Canada, US & Mexico. Mexico was quite a challenge but absolutely awesome.

I don’t have a favourite (non-north americian) soft drink so here is a new question: When was the last time you went river rafting & where?

  • Hi Penney!! :D

A: I went twice last year — A really fun, quick trip in Whistler, and then an overnight at Reo Rafting.
Q: Got anything fun planned for this weekend?

  • Russ says:

A: What else in Florida but a POOL PARTY?? One of my employees is celebrating her 30th (I was once 30) and is having a huge party. She is VERY Latino and VERY much into having a good time. Looking forward to it.

Q: Do you have a pet? If so, what is it and just how much do you pamper it?

  • A says:

I have a pet, it’s a cat named Shadows. Sometimes when I’m out, I miss him so much that I can’t wait to go home and see him! Of course, he doesn’t care about me except during feeding time. But I love him almost like a son! (I know, sick.)

  • Mr. Althouse says:

I have two pets. Their names are Romeo and Juliet. Thay are 10 cent “feeder” goldfish that have grown to predator size. And yes, I am fairly certaion they are lovers.

I’ve asked this recently elsewhere, but it always elicits an interesting response:

    Maryann or Ginger?

  • A says:

Oh yeah, almost forgot. Here’s my question:

When you go to the fruit stand, what fruit do you most look forward to buying, and why?

  • Thumper says:

I don’t swing that way, but I’ll say Maryann for the heck of it. Ginger was just too freaky, wearing evening gowns on an island and all…

Do you get your news from TV, online, or in print?

    (And hi! Michele sent me!)

  • “A” was missed… So I’ll answer that question first…

A: Bananas! I just love them, and I actually crave them when I don’t have them at home!

    And for the other answer:

A: I get my news mostly from broadcast tv, although I also catch up on the newspaper vs. of the stories over the weekend. I love the news hour!

Q: What’s your favourite song right now?

  • Patricia says:

    A. “Falling Slowly” from the irish film “Once”, it’s sung by Glen Hanshard. The song is kind of rough and imperfect but sung with SO much PASSION it almost brings me to tears. I love it.

    Q. If you could be any comic book hero who would you be?

  • A. I don’t really like comic books at all, but I took an online quiz once that asked that question and I got the Hulk as my comic book character LOL That may be closest to my personality I suppose!

    Q. What makes you the happiest in your life?

  • (whispers: “Whoops! Here from Michele’s!”)

  • Heya Stephanie!! :D

A: Happiest? Being surrounded with people who care a great deal about me. Nothing makes me happier, actually. I’m so lucky to have such amazing people in my life.

Q: What did you do tonight?

  • Utenzi says:

Michele sent me over this time, Tan. Hi!

    A. I’ve been making –and eating– muffins for the past 2 hours. Mostly Banana Nut but also some Apple Cinnamon. I am stuffed! No real reason to make them–other than liking to eat them. My girlfriend is off being social for the weekend so I’m just filling my time and belly. LOL

    Q. What’s the last animal you took a picture of?

  • Hannah says:

My cat, Supercat. (I didn’t name her, she came with the name when I rescued her.) She is, of course, standing on the keyboard as I try to type this.

What’s the last piece of fluffy summer reading material you spent a weekend with? Or, for the non-readers, the last summer movie you watched?

  • A: Naked by David Sedaris… A collection of very funny short stories. He’s *such* a great author!

Q: Are you going to go and see Harry Potter?

  • P says:

The excitement this weekend was taking the grandkids to see Harry Potter.
As for biking I will be off on some travels in Aug.
Haven’t got the nerve for river rafting just yet.
What is your next wild trip?

  • Hopefully, if there’s space, Vern and I will be heading to White Water raft this weekend! After that, I have no wild trips planned, yet. Considering a trip to London, or Dubai to see my cousin later in the year, perhaps!

Q: Other than this blog, which was the last blog you visited?

  • Rachel says:

    A: Paul’s blog!

And thanks for the dentist recommendations, guys.

Lonely Planet is great, but not infallible, by far. It can also depend on which country you are visiting as to the guide you pick up and the type of travelling you are doing.

Let me know if you want a good tip on buying your next cruise too! Paul & I went on a small one in a Turkish Gulet (90 feet long and just the 2 of us and the 2 crew) for our honeymoon, but I would love to try a real cruise. I know they are the epitome of decadence and not environmentally friendly, though…

Donna: what an adventure you are going to have and do be careful!

I will have a think about your contest Tanya.

Q: Do I have to ask another question?

  • Frank says:

Wow, I’ve seriously been neglecting my internet reading, it takes a good while to read 47 comments, and I wanted to answer so many. so for a few:

Swimming in the ocean: 2 days ago (I live in Hawaii ;-) )
Hiking: Last week, to Makapu’u lighthouse, and found some amazing tide pools.
cooked fish I’ve caught: yes, on the rare occasion i catch anything.
cook from scratch: all the time! Tonight is chicken piccata (baking, not so much)
Books: Just read The Dante Club, it was so-so. Currently reading Water for Elephants, it’s amazing.
Pets: We just got a 7 week old puppy! He’s the cutest and most pampered puppy in the world.

Do you really have to ask another question: Only if you really want to ;-)

LOL, and it looks like i’ve been lapped, you just posted this weeks socializing game. so…

Should I just post a question on the new game?

  • Hi Frank! Might as well! ;) (Loved your answers!)
