It's the MID-WEEK Socialing Game!

It's the mid-week socializing game!Hey guys! It’s that time of the week, again… Time to socialize on the fly! (And, I’ll have one of those shots in the photo, please!)

Here’s how it works:

I’ll start with a question, and the first person answers my question, and then asks a different question for the next person in the same comment.

I’ll start!

In the spirit of me eliminating my self-imposed dating hiatus, do you have any dating advice for this chick?

  • A: Nope, sorry. I don’t / can’t really believe you need it!

Oh, maybe this: Stop with the self-imposed dating hiatus (especially when combined with grumbling about a dating dry-spell on the blog) and get out there.

Q: This Facebook think I’m hearing a lot about: Is it all fun & games, or is there some real value there?

  • Miranda says:

Real value. I want to write a book about how much real value….

I don’t look to facebook as a way to keep up with my close friends, although I can and do on there, I already did that other ways. What is amazing about facebook to me is that now when I’m quickly introduced to someone new at a party or an event who I’m interested in chatting more with and learning more about, I have an easy, accessible way to do that. While some people will tell you that they would just call or email those people, I know that most of the time I wouldn’t – a call or email sometimes is just too much when all you want to do is say “hey” like you would if you saw them on the street, and see where that leads.

From a business perspective I’m already enjoying the benefits, although I haven’t yet completely thought out the whole business me/personal me mix. Some of my clients – past and present – have found me and added me on there. And you know what? I’m finding it a really cool way to keep in touch with both on a personal level. I am in a personal business (wedding photography), and the longer I am top of mind after the wedding means that I both build friends and also am more likely to be mentioned for a referral.

Oh – and I’ve been getting a couple business inquiries a week through my extended network, too. Jobs I wouldn’t have gotten without Facebook as a starting point to contact.

So, yup, to me – major real value!

Q: What will you be doing on the long weekend? Any plans?

  • donna says:

A: camping! And, therefore, watching my dog act like an idiot and torment my friends. It’ll be awesome. :)

Q: If you wanted to go to a budget-friendly but still awesome spa in Vancouver, where would you go?

  • Wow, Miranda! What a great comment on the value of Facebook! ;)

A: I forgot to mention last night that Spa Utopia has an education center where you can get greatly discounted services with students. It’s a fab deal!

Q: Do you use coupons? An Entertainment book?

  • Stefanie says:

A: Yes, sometimes those associated with my discount cards at Chapters and La Senza – but never at restaurants or anything like that. No – never used an entertainment book but my friend in University used to buy them and I got some pretty good 2-for-1 deals.

Q: Do you know anyone who has met anyone good on Craigslist dating?

  • A: I just had to pipe in for this one! Ha! :) I have some experience with CL for dating. The majority of my experience was not very good. The problem I had with it was the fact that my ad was responded to by people who had a ton more info about me than I of them… And it’s really frustrating to start the process with several back and forth messages only to find out there’s a red flag. If there was a mandatory amount of information they had to fill out that was sent along with the response, it would make things so much easier! I felt like a quiz show host with asking all the dumb questions over and over again.

I did meet and date one guy for several dates, only to find that we just weren’t compatible on a few levels — And, I know he wasn’t accurate with his specified age (doing the math, he said he was born on a leap year, which doesn’t add up…)

So, I hope this helps, Stefanie! :D

Q: What is your favourite restaurant? Why?

  • Rick says:

Tan, you crack me up woman. You are the online dating site guru!! ~bows down to T~

There is a small place a bit west of Boulder, CO that I love to go to a few times a year. I like it for a couple reasons. One is they have an “early bird special” on Friday-Saturday starting at 4:00pm. All the meals are 1/2 price and the exact same as the evening dishes. Every time I have gone, they always have incredible appetizers that are never the same. For example one evening they had Rattlesnake Cakes… real live… well dead, rattlesnake… almost like Sushi, except no rice or wasabi (sp?), it was cooked and didn’t taste like fish… tasted more like chicken. Sorta. Excellent service, food is awesome and the atmosphere very intimate. Good “American” type of food with a German flair.

Q: How many web sites do you maintain? (i.e. Blog, Face Book, MySpace etc.)

  • A: Dairy Queen. Large dipped cone, baby!

And thank you very much, Miranda, that was indeed a great answer about the value of Facebook. I think you switched me from 80/20 against joining to 80/20 for joining. :-)

Q: I’m thinking about watching the fireworks tonight from the Kitsilano side — anybody watched it from there? Is it worth it?

  • Laura says:

Oh I have comments on a few of the Q’s above, apologies for diving into that first!

Donna: Runaway Bay in Edgemont Village in North Van. It’s not a full-on spa, but they have great prices on the services they do offer. (mani, pedi, facials, waxing, I think massages…)

Miranda: how crazy to find another wedding vendor on here! I’m just starting up a wedding planning business and putting together a list of Vancouver wedding vendors I want to work with. I’ll check out your site. And awesome tip about using Facebook for networking.

Stefanie: Not craigslist, but I met my fiance through Lavalife, and our best friends who just got married met on Lavalife too.

    Okay! On to answers!

A1: 3, I think. Facebook, my wedding planning blog, and SparkPeople. I haven’t got my wedding planning website up yet but when I do, it’ll be 4.

A2: Haven’t ever watched fireworks from Kits. Not about to start.

Q: What’s your favourite Vancouver restaurant?

  • Hey Laura! Thanks for the responses… I love it when people dive in! ;) Miranda’s professional site is here and her and her husband Reilly do photography full time — They’re incredibly talented!

    Now…

A: Carderos!! I *love* their wok chicken dish. YUH-mmy!

Q: What’s your favourite board game or console game right now?

  • Russ says:

    A. Best game going is MotoGP on Xbox. Too cheap to get the 360 (and maybe too old?) but the standard game is wicked fun.

    Q. What is your favorite Discovery Channel show or other current documentary?

  • Patricia says:

    A. Well, it isn’t that current (I think it came out a year or so ago) but I really liked the John Cleese documentary “Human Faces”, it was really interesting (and entertaining).

B.What is your number one homemade cuisine specialty? (your special dish)

  • Laura says:

    A. Peanut butter chocolate chip cookies. So freaking good.

    Q. What’s your favourite flower?

  • Charlene says:

    A. Any kind of orchid. They are beautiful and last a really long time.

    Q. Where is your favorite beach in the world and why?

  • Lara says:

Manitoulin Island – Providence Bay. Its white sand on a really clean lake, warm enough to swim in and hosts the northern lights in late August. Spent a lot of my adolescence there too which means I have a certain level of nostalgia.

Locally I have recently become a fan of Wreck Beach.

CMS – Open Source a good idea?

  • Jer says:

Almost ANY Open Source is a good idea. And if it weren’t for CMS, the blogosphere would be radically different (or non-existent?). So yes.

Have you ever met a politician that you liked?

  • Tawcan says:

    Unfortunately no.

Q: What operating system does your computer use? If you’re using Vista what’s your experience with it?

  • A: I’m on XP — With (painful) experience at the office running Vista. It’s just far too slow, and a memory hog, even with 2 gigs of ram, to be worth installing on my home machines. I think I’ll hold off until the first service pack comes out. Hopefully by that point, I’ll have a 4 gig ram machine on which to install it the full-meal-deal version that I have sitting on my desk right now.

Q: If you live in Vancouver, and saw the fireworks last night, how was your experience? (I was working until 2:30am, so I avoided that craziness around home) If you live out of town, does your city host a fireworks competition?

  • Donna says:

It was FANTASTIC. I had the benefit of being on a friends apartment rooftop, so I could avoid the sheeple and just watch them from a distance instead. Sheeple are funny. They look like Zombies from the 10th floor.

Spain did a great job. Honestly, the finale was probably the best show I’ve ever seen.

    Q. What are your favorite type of shoes for walking? Walking a LOT? Brand, style, etc?

  • Hannah says:

I wear my Doc Martins when I can’t wear sneakers. I have had them for two years, and they’ve never given me a blister. They look like military boots, except they’re shoes – they kind of look like men’s shoes, but they’re women’s. I love them. For sneakers, I’ve got a pair of Nike jogging shoes that are okay. And my favorite pair of heels are a pair that I found from a street vendor here in Korea. No brand markings on them, but low slingback heels, that I can wear for 15 hours without sore feet.
Q: Reading Tanya’s blog has inspired me to go rafting tomorrow. What has Tanya’s blog inspired you to do recently?

  • A: Awww… Thanks Hannah! I’m glad I inspired someone to do something fun!

Thought I’d close this out, and not leave Hannah hanging.
