Back after hiatus! The MID-WEEK Socializing Game!
Hey guys! It’s that time of the week, again… Time to socialize on the fly! (And, I’ll have one of those shots in the photo, please!)
Here’s how it works: I’ll start with a question, and the first person answers my question, and then asks a different question for the next person in the same comment.
I’ll start!
How are you celebrating Christmas and New Years, this year?

I’m Jewish, so I’ve already had my holiday fun! It was spent quietly with my family. I plan on going to a house party for New Years! (what are you doing?)
Question: Did you go to a lot of holiday parties this season?
Answer.- No, I didn’t. I went to Mexico for the holidays and even though this is a country where people party a lot, I haven’t attended any posadas yet. But on the other hand, I couldn’t attend other parties in Vancouver anyways.
Tanya – my 500th post is up, so check out how I worked your Mid-Week Socializing game into my post!
Question.- What do you do to avoid winter blues?
A. Lots of yummy treats, and I’m not afraid to admit that I buy great xmas gifts for myself.
Q. How many snail mail christmas cards have you received thus far this year?
So far I’ve received about a dozen. And most of those are from people like the vet and the financial planner, etc. It’s kinda sad actually. Then again, I am one of those terrible people who sends her cards at the last possible minute.
Q: How many snail mail cards have you *sent* this year?
I don’t give cards. As a recipient, I enjoy them, and then put them in recycling rather quickly. I pretty much never give cards on holidays or birthdays unless it’s accompanying a gift.
In terms of emailing season’s greetings, I’ve done it once so far. I’m very old-fashioned: phone calls as opposed to email, and presents / taking someone out, as opposed to just giving a card.
Q: Are you giving a “humanitarian”, non-material gift this year (e.g. donating to a charity in someone’s name)?
Hi guys!
A: Yes, this year, the majority of my holiday budget is being given to the Terry Fox Foundation, in my Dad’s name. Although I’ve been invited out to several family gatherings for Christmas, I’ve elected to not celebrate Christmas this year. It’s just too close to my Dad’s passing.
Q: Did you put up a tree this year?
A. No tree for me. We don’t usually put up a tree as we spend Xmas either at my parents or my husbands parents. This year we are heading up to the frozen north (Fort St. John area) to spend Xmas with my husbands family. My reward for going up to the cold north is 3 weeks in Mexico later in January.
Q. Turkey or Ham for the 25th?
A. Turkeys. Two of them, at least. Probably ham, too, although I don’t know the exact menu. Being the daughter of divorced parents, I once again have two family dinners to go to. One of them will be for my dads side of the family, with the expected attendance to be … lesse, dad + 3 siblings + spouses + kids + grandma… 17. And after that, I’ll be off to Mom’s, for our dinner with … 15, I think?
I may need to be rolled home. Luckily, I’m staying at my moms for a few days, the only rolling required will be up to my bed.
Q. What’s on your stocking?
A: Oh man, I’m going to sound totally pathetic. I don’t have a stocking. Hell. I’m single. Vern’s not even around this Christmas for the first time in years… So, I don’t really need a stocking. *sigh* I seriously am not as pathetic as I sound. Really! But, if I had a stocking, I think I’d like one similar to the one I got Vern a few years ago… It’s silver with snowflakes on it. I saw it a couple of days ago at his place (he’s actually got a few decorations up.)
Q: If you were me, and not wanting to mark Christmas as ‘THAT SPECIAL DAY’, how would you spend it, and avoid feeling lonely and regretting the decision to skip it?
A. If I were you, I’d accept an invitation to come out to christmas dinner with my parents place.
We have a tradition of finding homes for Christmas orphans.
But… that does sort of defeat the purpose of skipping it. So… I got nothing. Catch a movie? Find the greasiest chinese food place you can and gorge? Rent seventeen really awful chick flicks, grab a bottle of wine and refuse to get out of your pajamas all day?
Q. Sparkly tealights: Ridiculous or SUPER ridiculous?
A. Ridiculous.
Q. Dark or light christmas cake?
A. Dark. mmmmm….
B. Does christmas start on Dec 25, or end on Dec 25?
A: Neither~ Christmas starts… EARLY! Like, December 1st. I’m usually the 1st one of all my friends who puts up the decorations, and has the treats made (yes, guys, I do actually bake/cook!) and the parties at my place for the season start then as well. End? New Years Day, when the hang-over takes over, and the detox begins
Q: What’s your fondest Christmas memory?
A: Fondest memory.. whew, that’s a bit of a tough one for me.
Christmas hasn’t exactly been a ball of joy to me over the years. I’ve had a few close friends and a partner die at this time of year. So for a very long time this particular time of year has been very distasteful for me due to the memories associated with it.
But going back my fondest memory would have to be when I was between 7 – 12. At that time my family was living in a rural area and I was big enough by then to go snow shoeing with my father to go get a tree from the bush and drag it out behind us.
There was a lot of excitement of bringing it into the house, decorating it, the presents underneath and of course having time off from school to spend my days outside x-country skiing or skating on the lake in front of our place(even better if there had been lots of wind and the lake was completely clear of snow.).
Then of course there’s the excitement of opening presents and the food of that day.
Q: What’s your favourite thing to do outdoors at this time of year?
I know it sounds sick, but my favourite outdoor thing in winter is rowing (summer too, for that matter). Of course, the fact that we have water and not ice makes this easier. But the cold is bracing, and the rain often adds a certain ethereal stillness to the early morning air.
Q: Do you find yourself being more generous towards others during the holiday season, or do you try to keep it going all year long?
I generally feel that I am a generous person but perhaps a little more over the holidays.
Tanya, here’s wishing you all the best over the holidays. I’m hoping we can get together in early January before I have to go back to work.
Q: Are you traveling this holiday season or staying close to home?
I’m currently in Mexico (where it’s sunny and the temperature hovers around + 27oC)… I know, sue me! But I do miss Vancouver, particularly my best friends there! My friends here tend not to be cuddly whereas my Vancouver-based friends are cuddlier and thus, I miss them more.
Q: Do you bring work home during the holidays or just take time off, completely?
Raul’s last blog post..My 500th post
A: well i work at home so it’s always there, but i’m trying to ignore it this year. starting now. ok, well maybe tomorrow…
Q: If you could ask Santa to bring you one thing, any thing or everything you’ve ever wanted, what would it be?
A: I want Santa to bring about a Go-Zillion to our local Habitat for Humanity Chapter. We really need to get some decent housing here in our city.
Q:Do you have an unusual family tradition for your Christmas dinner?
Russ’s last blog post..It’s over…
A. What’s unusual about our Christmases is that we don’t have a particular tradition. We’re a blended family so every year we do things just a bit different. The kids never really know quite what to expect, except that there will be a tree, and a few cheerily wrapped gifts. After that, it’s a crap shoot.
Q. Tree – real or fake?
richgold’s last blog post..One week later
A: Fake. Real trees shed too much.
Q: Did you ever believe in Santa when you were a kid or were you a skeptic?
Mike’s last blog post..I am only somewhat legend
A: Um, I was seriously a skeptic. Yep. I was a cynical little kid
Aww crap, I’m messing up my own SOCIALIZING GAME.
I really need to pay attention.
Q: What did you leave out for Santa (if you left anything out?), when you were a kid?
[...] of the things i have on my blog goals for this year is more reader interaction. for example, i love netchick’s mid-week socializing game, and i can’t wait until i have the time to participate in liz strauss’ famous tuesday open mic. [...]
