My visit to Global TV, yesterday
Yesterday, as most of you know, I headed off to Global TV during lunch, to meet with the team there including the producer Fiona, (who called me to let me know I was chosen as a semi-finalist) Randene Neill (my favourite anchor for years now), and the fitness expert / trainer who would be overseeing the Fitness Fantasy Contest that Global TV and the Province newspaper are putting on.
Besides me, there were four other semi-finalists there yesterday, only one of them a guy. They’ll be interviewing the rest of the semi-finalists today and tomorrow, and letting us know soon who of the 12 will be picked as the final four.
Walking into the meeting, I felt confident. Both in myself, and my abilities to make an impression… I really wanted to be picked to do this. To me, being picked alone was a win all the way around.
But then, I heard the other stories of the three women and man who also wanted to be chosen. My reasons, to gain energy, to lose 30 lbs to feel better, to make a better first impression (because I’m single and looking), to avoid needing to take Thyroid meds (I really want to stay sub-clinical and deal with this on-going health issue with diet and exercise as long as I can), to get fit enough to get back to rowing (because I miss that sport *so* much), and to stop the lower back pain from carrying around even a few extra pounds — Those reasons felt really, really pathetic when I heard one lady wanted to donate a kidney to her brother and needed to lose 40 lbs before the doctors could consider the transplant, or another woman who puts her family, including her wheelchair-bound husband who she assists full-time before her, and doesn’t make time to keep herself healthy.
And the stories continued.
And by the time they got to me… All I could really say was “I really, really want this.” I tried to give the reasons I mentioned above, but, man… How can I share how dedicated and fully committed I’d be to achieving this for myself, when I heard those stories?
I just hope I made impression enough to at least be short-listed.
Even if I don’t make the cut (and I’m still delighted that I was given the opportunity to try for it), I’m going to make this happen for myself. If anyone has a personal trainer they love, that’s reasonable in price, and works downtown, please let me know. I know in order to realize full success with this, I’m going to need to hire a really great fitness expert.
Keep your fingers crossed for me! Peter Pan film

I’m really happy working with my personal trainer – though I suppose it depends on your definition of a “reasonable price.” I’m paying $75/1h session for 2 sessions per week, so about $600/month for my schedule. Of all the trainers in the city I looked at, I saw rates anywhere between $65-$90.
Considering I’m paying a training group for someone who has a Master’s degree in human kinetics working one on one with me for that whole hour, and the overhead that goes with running a business and paying the facility fees – the trainer isn’t exactly making a bundle. I certainly find it a fair price considering what I’d pay any other consultant for one-on-one work in their field of expertise.
And out of it all, I just feel good. And that’s worth its weight in gold to me.
If you’re interested, My trainer is Mon Jef with Peak Performance. They operate out of the Executive Lifestyle facility on 8th at Cambie. It’s a quick trip up there on the #15 bus after work, and puts me in a good position to get home down Broadway afterward (so YMMV with the location).
I’ve also heard good things about Studeo55, and I believe they’re downtown near Alberni/Thurlow (so far closer for you!).
Good luck first and foremost getting on the show, but if that doesn’t happen, I hope you’ll go get a trainer! Once I got over the initial sticker shock, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for myself.
Thanks Cin
Jen… That’s exactly what I was looking for! And, by the way, the location you use is 4 blocks from my work! So, if I don’t get picked (please pick me, pick me!!) I’ll definitely be looking into Peak Performance! You rock!
I think you have a pretty good chance. In the end it’s all about casting, and they usually try to get a good balance of different types of people who are there for different reasons.
good luck & I hope you get picked! I can though recommend my trainer Alia, of Dynamic Lifestyle Coaching, she is amazing. I can send you her deets if you like!
she comes to you and will do whatever you want to do, and she’s super sweet to boot!

Anthony has been working with an awesome trainer downtown. Milwena Guzman at Citahealth. He’s recommended her to a number of his friends too. Been working with her for years and he’s super hot! I had a few sessions with her also and I really liked her – she works with all levels of fitness goals and is really supportive.
Fingers and toes crossed. Good luck!

I’ve got every digit tightly crossed for you, Tanya. I’ve got to believe that your energy helped you stand out from the crowd. Sometimes, an emotional pull-type context is helpful. But they’re likely looking for an overall balance – humanity, energy, connection with the audience – and in that context, you’d have more oomph than the folks you’re competing against.
I often use the term relatable when I think about audiences. They need relatable, which is why they called you back. Either way, you’re a star in my book.
