iPhone… I just can't wait anymore.
I’ve been *so* patient. I have quietly (mostly, anyhow) sat here, and waited for the whole iPhone debacle in Canada to be finished with. But, I’m done waiting. This chick will wait no longer.
Since I’m heading down to Washington state this weekend, anyhow… I figure I might as well use this opportunity to purchase one of the spanking new 16 gig iPhones while I’m there. It’s perfect timing really, because I was almost ready to buy a RIM Blackberry on Monday. I’m glad I waited — Now I can sell my iPod Touch which I’ve only had a few months (I believe I already have a buyer…) and replace it with the same-capacity iPhone.
Besides, I’ve had iPhone envy for almost a year, with both Tod (who has bought *3 2* now) and John
constantly showing off theirs. It’s my turn to get into the iPhone goodness, darnit!
Zphone has a new application to Jailbreak (and more) to 1.1.4, which will make it stupidly simple to do that task (not that jailbreaking my Touch was much of a chore, actually.) And, a blog I read, IphoneInCanada.ca is giving away an InvisibleShield (very cool skin to protect the iPhone and Touch), so maybe I’ll get lucky and win one of those!
So, does anyone have any advice to give me, regarding my new iPhone purchase, or must-have application? Any recommendations on which Rogers plan I should get myself into? Kill Bill: Vol. 2 divx Two Mules for Sister Sara dvd

That’s a lotta energy to expend on so much hype. I just got a Telus P4000 (aka HTC Titan) and love it. I’ve already hacked it to enable the internal GPS and added stuff like TouchFlo so it operates like a Touch. If I really need 16GB of music I can just get three more 4GB MicroSD cards.
I guess you love or hate the iPhone. I love my Touch (of the Apple iPod variety, not HTC variety) and would love to carry 1 device. Now that I’m working out for over 5 hours a week, it’ll be nice to not worry about my cellphone as well as carry my Touch. Trust me, I’d prefer to have the awesome external keyboard that you have.
That said, I hear those types of devices crash a lot, and you don’t even know you’ve missed calls. This is my main phone, and I can’t afford to be missing calls. I’ve heard this from two different Rogers/Telus employees… Apparently if you are using the extended media features, it’s going to happen.
It crashed a lot with an earlier “non-standard” ROM, and had some issues with not answering calls, but this one has been really solid. It can freeze up if I run TOO much memory-intensive stuff at once (since HTC only allocated 64MB of the internal RAM as “program memory”) but long as I’m careful to close applications instead of just minimizing them, it’s no problem.
Of course, crashing and other issues are natural side-effects of hacking ANY phone – depends on how you want to balance stability with enabling extra goodies. I love the GPS functionality (see my photo gallery on Facebook for one example: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=94637&id=634995401).
Besides, if it doesn’t pick up a call, it goes to voicemail and I can call right back.
I did look at the HTC Touch (sort of an iPhone knockoff design, I suppose, but the one thing I couldn’t stand was the on-screen keyboard, and I suspect the same thing would drive me nuts on the iPhone. The P4000′s slide-out keyboard is nice, but frankly, I much prefer my Treo’s keyboard – if Telus had had a good deal on a Treo when I renewed, I might have gone with that
instead.
I never thought I’d say it, but I’m also liking using a Windows Mobile device – it’s a whole other level of hackability over the PalmOS devices, the ActiveSync is a lot cleaner and more trouble-free than Palm Desktop/Hotsync, and I do like being able to sync my Outlook contacts and calendars without need of additional software.
If Plan A person for the Touch doesn’t pan out, can I be next in line? (need to think it through a bit more, but I’ve been wanting one for a while)

You go girl! I love my iPhone to death. People who don’t have one just don’t get it. I absolutely understand about you having to get one. Oh, and mine has never crashed since I got it truly unlocked.
BTW, I’m running mine on 1.1.3, which I jailbroke and unlocked using Ziphone, and it took a couple of tries, but once it took, it was perfect. I’ve contemplated moving to 1.1.4, and probably will some day, but that will require wiping it and starting from fresh (with the new firmware), and I’ll have to move all my music and podcasts back on again (I do it all manually because us Classical folks can’t us autosynching because we have to have a playlist for every piece).
Software to recommend? Converter is nice, especially when trying to figure out MPG (Miles per Gallon) from KPL (Kilometers per Liter). There’s a nice simple App that makes it so that Contacts are an icon, rather than getting there from the phone app. Also Facebook, the New York Times and some other sites have really nice iPhone friendly URLs (and there are 2 awesome plugins for WordPress, one that automatically formats your site for anyone connecting with an iPhone, and another for giving you essentially an iPhone-based dashboard for managing and posting to your blog).
Good luck getting this. BTW, I hear that Skype will be available soon, so using the iPhone for almost free long distance when in a WiFi network will be coming (suck on that, Rogers!).

Hi, How are you? Your blog is very cheery and warm place to hang out. I haven’t been to Vancouver in a long time. Used to like walking around there on Denman and Robson streets. I like those cute shops in that area. Well, take care and have a great week!

I have an entire series on the “Vancouver Girl’s Guide to the iPhone”. So far though, the best resource has definitely been Mr. Biehler hehe.
Nope. Only bought two.

I messed around on an iPhone a while ago and found that I have fat thumbs.
Make sure you don’t surf the net and talk at the same time and expect internet connection to work. EDGE doesn’t allow that (voice takes priority).

That’s awesome Tanya….we’ve talked a few times about it so I know you’ll love it.
Let me know if you have any questions about ZiPhone….there was a convoy of cabs to the Apple store in Austin and I helped a couple of people get up and running while down there.

First of all… Welcome, Scott! Thanks for stopping by! (And the compliments on my blog, too!)
I appreciate all the info and feedback guys! My iPhone is jailbroken to 1.1.4, I’ve “played” with the IMEI (err, Rogers isn’t reading this, I hope? LOL!), and I’ve also hacked the proxy ip and settings. I’m good to go, I think!
BTW: Getting the phone was a funny story that I’ll be posting about soon. Not as easy as I thought to get a 16gb iPhone! Everyone was sold out.
And now, I have a iPod Touch for sale!! (16gb, practically brand new) — See my most recent post for a great deal, if you don’t have the iPhone!)
Hi Tanya,
Nice Blog. I found it through iphoneincanada.com. It’s always nice to find a place for some intelligent conversation, especially one as “cozy” feeling as this! I’m from Airdrie, Alberta (just north of Calgary). My business is in downtown Calgary. Myself and my business partner have iPhones along with my wife. We love them so far. My wife & I are 1.1.4 and are eagerly awaiting the 2.0 release in June!
Quick question. Other than availability of the 16gb phone you purchased, how difficult was the buying process? Will an Apple store simply sell you a phone without a contract?
I’m glad I found your blog… it’s refreshing!
Hi Tim! Welcome… I’m glad you found my blog!
The Apple store wasn’t the problem. They just didn’t have stock. There’s no obligation to get a plan when buying from them, and they don’t actually sell the plan as far as I can see.
I bought mine from an AT&T store, actually. Yep. A Canadian who managed to buy one without a contract. It took some fancy footwork to wrangle that deal and head home with a 16gb iPhone. Just one little white lie I told on the spot. Wasn’t like I was stealing the phone — I paid my $499! (Plus WA state tax)
More to come in a future blog entry!
