First to answer Tanya’s mid-week socializing game! WOWZA!

A.- You know me in person, hehehe. Yeah, I think I’m an outgoing person. There are a few times when I freeze in a social setting. For example, when there is no actual room to “squeeze in” and I can’t really approach anyone comfortably. Otherwise, I tend to be outgoing.

    I like this “personality theme”!

Q.- What has been so far your best conversation-opening one liner? Or if you’re a bit more introverted, what has been the best line someone has used to come up and talk to you?

Raul’s last blog post: Why I’m probably going to cave to Facebook

  • Okay, let’s see if we can’t get more action… :) I’ll answer this one!

A: eheh.. I’m famous for “Are you as bored as I am?” hehe… I know. That’s mean, but it definitely starts conversation in a less-than-enthusiastic group. Hell, it’s *rare* that I’m approached, especially in a tech-type group of mostly men — Weird huh? I think I come off as a little too outgoing for some, I guess.

Q: Do you go to social meet-ups, where you don’t know anyone?

  • Carmi says:

A – I think the one my wife used on me the first time we met: What are you doing for the rest of your life?

Q – What’s the nicest thing someone has ever done for you?

Carmi’s last blog post: Wordless Wednesday – He sleeps

  • Wow, Carmi… What an awesome line!!

A: Hmmm… I’ve had so many nice things done for me. That’s a tough one. I think, it was the day that Vern put together for me for my birthday many years ago. It was such a great day, and although it wasn’t about “what I got” he spoiled me rotten, and made me feel really special.

Q: I’ll go back to the question I posted above!

  • Average Jane says:

Do you go to social meet-ups, where you don’t know anyone?

A: All the time! At this point, I don’t hesitate to knock on a door or walk into a bar where there’s a meetup and just start talking to people until I find the people I was looking for but don’t know by sight.

Q: Have you ever been to a social media or blogging conference?

  • I’m being an answer hog today!

A: Well, actually, I organize Third Tuesday Vancouver events (a social media gathering once a month), so, yes! :) Northern Voice is another favourite once a year.

Q: That was such a great question that I’ll duplicate it for the next person! :D

  • colleen says:

A: i TOTALLY go to social media meet ups. I tend to know enough people in the local scene now that i can walk in and know pretty much everyone. and if not, then I find someone to talk to. :D

@Tanya I think it’s interesting that you don’t get approached at tech events with lots of men. i *constantly* get approached. *constantly*. Hell, at SXSW i was the only chick at a table with 7 guys. and we attracted more.

now.. hrm… a question. Would you read a blog about cocktails on a regular basis?

colleen’s last blog post: it pays to have friends in high places

  • Raul says:

A.- Oh, most certainly. In one of my many lives, I’ve been a bartender, so I *always* want to read more about cocktails (perhaps drop the “drink sustainably” or “drink responsibly” posts here and there). But if the blog is about cocktails, I’m all up for it.

YAY – Seems everyone is on socializing mood. And Monica Hamburg mentioned your blog as a model example, to which I agree, Tanya – you rock!!!

Q.- If you’re a female – in social situations, do men try to “talk less techie” or do they just go about their business? If you’re a female – do you do this kind of thing or just treat them as equals? (I know, contentious question, but it’s an interesting one!) :)

  • Tawcan says:

A: I think there’s a typo in Rual’s question, should say “If you’re a male – do you do this kind of thing or just treat them as equals?”

I treat them as equals. Besides, I try to talk about stuff other than tech when I’m out with a group of people. It’s all about expanding your conversation topics.

Q: If you’re a Vancouverite, what’s your favourite beach? If you’re not a Vancouverite, what’s your favourite spot to hang out in the summer?

Tawcan’s last blog post: You know your new roommate is a nerd when

  • Vern Baker says:

    Okay, so if I was a female… hmm… I couldnt imagine that.

Previous one then. I would only read about cocktails if there was a strong social component to it. It’s kind of like reading about food. It’s okay to read about food … I guess…. but, if there was:

“This is the cocktail list…. made like this… and best of all you get to try them ALL out at XXX tomorrow at N:NN”… then, I would be more intrigued.

Q: Should Tanya get a monkey for a pet?

Vern Baker’s last blog post: teleflow.org is finally here, and this is our official first post!

  • hehe… I’ll answer both, since Tawcan was missed. ;)

A1: Being a Vancouverite, I love to walk down to English Bay (which is way closer for me these days) and hang out there against a log, reading a book, or people watch. After, it’s fun to walk down Denman and get some fish n’ chips. But, hell, better than the beach… GET IN A KAYAK! Enjoy the water for real. I love renting my favourite shell (a lightweight one) from Spanish Banks, and head out for a few hours. I’m so glad I took that course last year — I can now go alone if I want.

A2: Uh. No, Tanya doesn’t WANT a monkey. Tanya wants a dog, but has been talked-to by her good friend Vern, and now realizes she’s pretty busy and won’t be home enough. Also? Her good friend Vern can’t be a dog-sitter when she goes away. Boo.

Q: If you have a pet, do you find that it cramps your lifestyle some? If you don’t, do you want a pet?

  • Stefanie says:

A: I have a cat – and since I am spending more time at my boyfriend’s lately, she is getting upset at me and is trying to exact revenge by jumping on my feet in the middle of the night. But – I think she is getting more used to it. But – overall it doesn’t really cramp my lifestyle. She is so cute and super loving (when she isn’t mad at me ;) ) so it all evens out.

Q: When you are in social situations with strangers, do you tend to go up to them, or do you wait for them to go to you (I tend to be the second type ;) ).

  • Tyler Ingram says:

A: It depends on my mood whether or not I approach them. Though if they approach me all to them, just ask me something I can answer with a single worded answer ;)

Q: If you could escape for a single week (all expenses paid for etc) where in the world would you go?

Tyler Ingram’s last blog post: Blog Stats for April 2008

  • Tawcan says:

A: Travel wise I’d love to go to either Scotland or Ireland. Adventure wise, Tantalus Range, maybe helicopter in instead of tyrolean across the Squamish River since it’s all expenses paid for.

Q: Do you have any vacation plans for this summer?

Tawcan’s last blog post: You know your new roommate is a nerd when

  • Regrettably, I don’t! I am on a pilot project and don’t have the nerve to ask for time off (and not sure I would want to anyway) so I’m hoping for a really great, and cheaper, holiday in the fall shoulder season.

Which is the better show: BattleStar Galactica, or LOST? Or neither?

nancy (aka money coach)’s last blog post: Why I clearly state I’m not a financial planner

  • A: Lost, by far. But if you asked me that last year (I only caught up on all 3 seasons of Lost during my trip late last year) I would have said BSG. I haven’t started watching this season of BSG yet, but it took so long that I’ve lost interest.

Q: Do you have any awesome plans this weekend?
