Vegas! Vegas! Vegas!
My birthday is coming up in 3 weeks… And guess what? I’ve done enough introspection for a lifetime around my birthdays (every year, it seems) so this year is gonna be different! Forget reflection upon the past year, blah blah blah. It sucked, for the most part. I don’t want to think about last year any more.
But this year? This year is going to be awesome! There’s six, possibly seven, of us heading off to Vegas to do some celebrating! There’s two of us with birthdays that week (one of whom met the love of his life at my birthday party last year, actually) so there’s plenty of reason to let loose and have a great time.
The rest haven’t booked their hotels yet, but you know me — I had to find a great place. Yep, I admit it, I can be a bit of a princess when I travel — But, I always get a fantastic deal, or I wouldn’t travel at the star level that I usually do. This trip is no different. I got a great deal at the five-star Venetian — I love that hotel with all the canals and ambiance, and every single room is a suite. And, to top it off, the Blue Man Group operates their shows out of that hotel, too! Bonus! I’ve never seen their show, but Tod goes on and on about it, so I guess I should splurge and see it while I’m there!
Here’s a photo of the suite!

What is your favourite place to stay in Vegas? Do you gamble a lot while you are there, or plan other adventures?

I think I’ve only ever played slots once or twice, and took in a game of Blackjack back in 2002 – which wasn’t too painful.
My trips to Vegas included:
1 – work trip (it was an office Christmas present from the bosses) stayed at the Flamingo. GREAT cheap hotel, right in the middle of the strip and awesome pool… with many pool bars.
2 – trip with my sister where we stayed at Paris. The oversized novelty Eiffel tower margaritas aren’t really worth the price but the breakfast buffet is absolutely heavenly (although the buffet at Bally’s is better bang for your buck). Also, you know the medieval show at the Excalibur? Well the “knights” also participate in a Chippendales review later in the evening… you know… FYI
3 – I spent about 32 hours there last summer and stayed at the Luxor. I wasn’t there long enough to take it all in but I realized just how FAR the Luxor was from the ‘main action’.
K, super long comment done. Man, you’re going to have an awesome time at the Venetian, it’s so beautiful!

Hey Rebecca! Thanks for the awesome comment — I almost booked at Paris, but, I thought the rooms looked kind of gaudy for the price. The Wynn, which I stayed at a few years ago with a girlfriend (a trip I took to get past a relationship, actually) was a beautiful hotel, but it seems it’s overpriced, and doesn’t have any deals. At least, I couldn’t find any, and I tried!
Thanks for the tips on the food — I always forget to ask about that. I’ve been to Vegas uh, six times now, and food just never really becomes a part of the adventure (although, it should!). Other than the “W” restaurant experience I shared with Sandi during our last trip. Holy cow, good, but holy cow expensive, too.
I think this trip will be less about gambling for me, and more about seeing the sights and taking in the shows. Sure, I’ve got a budget for the tables, too… But, that certainly isn’t my focus this time.
Has anyone been to “Tao” at the Venetian?
One day I’ll make it Vegas. As I’m not a gambler I’ve never had the need to go to Vegas, but looks like there is more to Vegas than just gambling the whole trip. Maybe one long weekend coming up I will venture to Vegas.
I look forward to your full review

Vegas baby!!
I work for a Casino third-party provider.
Tip: The best bet for the player is on the BlackJack tables. Especially if you are able to count cards inconspiciously (is that a word?)
I’m daring. I play roulette and place my money on either red or black. Almost a 50% chance of winning 1:1.
Have a nice stay!
Oh, and while I think of it, you should try to go and visit the Red Rock Casino. It’s NOT on the strip, and is a little further south-west of it. Mostly patrons are locals. The casino has a very “urban & lounge” look and feel. Truly stunning apparently. I’ve only seen pictures.

Hey thanks for the tip Brem!
I have won a LOT of money at Blackjack and Let-it-Ride (and uh, lost most of my winnings over time, too… Esp. on my recent cruise), but heck, I can’t count cards to save my life. Most casinos seem to use the continuous shuffle system these days. The ones that don’t, don’t pay out as well. I guess that’s what you get for playing single deck.
Occasionally, I’ll play roulette — For some silly reason, I think that watching the numbers helps. I really don’t think it does. Like you, I usually only play red or black.
I haven’t been to vegas since I was 18 (and I tell you, vegas when you’re not the legal gambling/drinking age? not so much fun) … but I’m hoping to rectify this for my birthday this year. ask me then.

Single Deck Blackjack is poor because you get a 6:5 payout on a Blackjack hand (I’ll refrain from using the acronym here hehehe). On a multi-deck blackjack, you get a much better return 3:2. However, I believe that, for example, on a 8-deck table, they place a yellow card at random in the “last 2 or 3 decks”. So when the dealer gets to the yellow card, they reshuffle. So that if you count cards, when there are fewer cards (and therefore an advantage to the counting card player), you forfeit that advantage.
Anyway, I’m not much of a player myself.
I prefer old school Texas Hold’em.
Michele sent me over this time, Tan. Hi!
I’ve not been to Vegas since I was a kid so I have no suggestions to make to you. At least not regarding Vegas.
That suite looks wonderful. I hope you have a great time and here’s an early Happy Birthday to you!

I’ve never actually been to vegas, but I’m weird. If I went there I would go for the hikes and not the slot machines so much. I hear there is a valley out there that’s brilliant for hiking.
I have been to the casinos in Monaco though, and flirted with the millionaires ….
Hmmm…. I *love* Vegas
Don’t have a favorite place to stay. I usually stay, well… with my ex-boyfriend, who currently lives there. But as they say, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas
And I passed my PhD defense!

T,
Blue Man ROCKS!!! I saw them several years ago when they were at the Luxor and I loved it. Very high energy, kick ass music and great audience interaction. As usual, center front is the place to be.
I am so jealous of you going to LV. Every time I go (and it’s not that often) I have SO much fun and it takes me three days at home to recover. Worth every second.
So, ummm… when is the trip?

You are going to have a blast in Vegas. I went last summer and while I don’t really gamble I never wanted for something to do. Walking up and down the strip can sometimes be entertainment enough!
While we were there we tried to see as many of the casinos as we could, some have shows, some of live animals, some just have awesome decor.
We also saw the Cirque de Soliel perform and it was amazing. It cost a lot but was well worth it.
Make sure you go to see “classic” Vegas instead of just staying on the strip though.

nice way to celebrate. btw the other couple that met at your birthday last year just got engaged.
OMG Lara!!! How awesome is that news? Okay, so my birthday (and other parties, it seems) brings good luck to everyone else… Maybe this year, it’ll bring good luck my way!
I’m so happy for you guys!!
