Vancouver in times long past
I don’t know about you, but I love looking at old photos of my home town. Vancouver has changed so drastically in 50 years, and these photos I received from Lorelei yesterday really shows how much…

Do you enjoy looking at old photos? If so, do you prefer to look at architecture, or people?
ps: If you enjoy reading about the history of Vancouver, check out Rebecca’s entry on the Little Green House on Richard’s Street . Neat blog post!

Most, if not all, of those are Frank Herzog photos. They had an exhibit on him a while back at the Art Gallery.
I love, love, love old photos of Vancouver, or UBC, or wherever I’ve lived. I’ve obsessively looked up photos about my office building (Vancouver Block) in the Vancouver Archives online or on Flickr. I even found a photo of the view from the top of my building looking north (the same view I see) from 1911! We’ve compared it to what we see outside and all that we recognize is Sinclair Centre. I’d link to it but the Vancouver Archives search page keeps crashing my browser with its javascript.
I love old photos of Vancouver – and I was shocked to see the Mount Pleasant Chapel!
I live near by, so it’s a subject that is near and dear to my heart.
Great post Tanya!

I love the old photos – all those neon signs were so cool, then we went ahead and got rid of top-of-building advertising in the city pffft. Thanks for the link love!

The photos are great. Both the people and the building are neat to look at.
The 1957 Robson Street photo killed me because there was un-vandalized public telephone that you could use inside the café and use. The women pushing their children looked uncomfortable wearing their dresses–probably have 10Lbs of underwear on too. But intriguing are the signs/ads on every building! Every square inch seems like it was dedicated to advertising. And the side walks look so clean and well maintained.
wow, major shifts in feel.
a new time *is* a new world.

What a change! East Hastings is now one of the worst region in the country. Never knew it looked that good 50 some years back. Nice find!
So Awesome! Ah, how much pride I have in living in the most amazing city in the world!

This was actually quite moving to me – esp. the ones of my ‘hood on Hastings.
I hope we can find our way back to that kind of vibrancy, in a gentle way.
