Year of the Dog rip (or, what was your last book?)

I want to live vicariously through you, dear visitor, since I seem to have formed a strange case of adult-onset ADD (I’m only half kidding), and can’t seem to concentrate long enough to read anything more than a magazine article (and that was business-related) in the past several weeks. I know it’ll pass, but I’m missing my novel ‘fix’!

So… Share! Tell me what I’m missing!

  • Does it have to be a novel?

I’m reading Buried Alive: The Terrifying History of Our Most Primal Fear.

Oh yeah baby – that’s exactly what it’s about.

Great for ADD – you can pretty much open the book up anywhere and regale in yet another tale of accidental burial.

A dark sense of humour helps. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

Each chapter begins with a little tidbit like this one:

There was a young man at Nunhead,
    Who awoke in a coffin of lead;
    “It is cosy ehough,”
    He remarked in a huff,
    “But I wasn’t aware I was dead”
    – Anonymous limerick reproduced in Burial Reformer I (1908): 100

    Aren’t you glad you asked?

Not really a novel, but it is full of dirty things.

“Sarbanes-Oxley IT Compliance using Open Source Tools, Second Edition”

    Yah… hardly exciting stuff.

  • “God Still Speaks Through Dreams” Greg Cynaumon Ph.D.
and I must say it led me to examine and to understand my two most recent and meaningful dreams. I have unlocked some of their meaning and applied it to my life.

I’m halfway through “Kiki Strike: Inside the Shadow City”. It’s a young adult novel but written by a New York ad exec. I like the snappy slick writing, and the story is fun, weird and entertaining.

Actually, if you haven’t read it yet I recommend “Never Let me go” by Kazuo Ishiguro (he wrote “Remains of the Day”). It’s a real page-turner..you won’t be able to put it down!

  • Laura says:

The book I’m actually reading right now is called “The Feminine Mistake” by Leslie Bennetts. It’s not a novel, it’s a non-fiction book about why it’s a bad idea for women to become stay at home mothers who are financially dependent on their husbands. A very thought-provoking read for me since I’d always wanted to eventually become a SAHM but I am rethinking that idea now.

The last novel I read, which was GREAT and I highly recommend it, was “Water for Elephants” by Sara Gruen. And my sister is currently reading “My Sister’s Keeper” and loving it. (Not sure who the author is though.)

    Happy reading!

    Demitrius “On Style”

So he’s been dead for a couple thousand years, and we don’t even know if he really is the author, or who “he” is even if he is. But it’s relevant all the same.

It’s part of a regimen of ancient thought for a grad school class…

Not exactly riveting, but not exactly not either.

I’m currently reading the Sword of Truth series (book 2 right now – Stone of Tears), Cryptonomicon and Rich Dad, Poor Dad.

I read several books at once. I find I get bored with one story easily. Right now, I just finished book #12 of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum Series. It’s a fun, light, easy read. The best chick lit out there. Stephanie is a bounty hunter who always gets into a jam, but always gets her man.

I’m also reading Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon, which is the second of a series. The first one is titled Outlander.

And, I am reading Change Your Thoughts – Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao by Wayne W. Dyer.

Reading right now … None ! I finished Heinlein’s To Sail Beyond The Sunset last night, which is pretty convenient because The Man From Amazon delivered Matter by Iain M Banks today :-)

I wouldn’t recommend the Heinlein book if you’ve read none of his before, it’s one that ties together stuff that got started in quite a few of his earlier books. Moon Is A Harsh Mistress is a far better introduction. Or Starship Troopers if you want to know why the Paul Verhoeven film was cringeworthy ;-)

  • Wow, guys… Awesome ideas. Now, I think I just need to stop the consumption of my 6 shots of espresso Americano each day, and maybe my concentration will improve.

I’ll definitely be checking back on this entry for future reads — Always better when someone says the book is a good one!

I am reading a great book which has a meeting of two worlds, east and west. It talks through the perspective from our conventional western viewpoint, then the countering eastern view. Really quite cool. Its written by a western psychologist and the dalai lama.

    Its called:
“The Art of Happiness, a handbook for living”

I picked it up at banyan books by my place.

Reading now? Just started ‘A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius’ by Dave Eggers. Its too early for me to recommend.
Last read was ‘Everville’ by Clive Barker – Fantastical and dark as always in the Clive Barker style
Before that was ‘White Tiger’ by Aravind Adiga – I liked it..here’s a review
Recently ‘No country for Old Men’ by Carmac McCarthy – Great read!
‘London Fields’ by Martin Amis is hilarious….in my opinion.
‘Skinny Dip’ by Carl Hiaasen – This book is entertaining and funny.
‘The Shellseekers’ by Rosamunde Pilcher – Touching story, wonderfully written. one of my favorites.

    I hope that helps

Right now I’m reading a series of textbooks. Research Design by Creswell, Conducting & Reading Research in Health & Human Performance by Baumgartner & Henseley, Research Methods in Physical Activity by Thomas et al, and Human Anatomy by Marieb, Mallatt & Wilhelm. Can’t say that I’d recommend them to you!

Seriously, though, I’m really missing reading books for pleasure, but so swamped with teaching these courses that every free minute I have to be reading texts. I barely even have time to keep up with my blog reading! Once exams are done, I have a pile of fun books to read including “Grammar Girl’s Quick & Dirty Tips for Better Writing” and “The Portable Atheist.” Also, I highly recommend “Outliers.”
