Considering an updated living situation.
Although I love Yaletown living and the building I’m in, I’ve been considering a move for a while — It’s no secret that I hate the white carpets in my current place, and the lack of a dining area as well.
The white carpets, despite my efforts to keep them clean, are simply gross (I moved in with them looking terrible as the unit had been through a flood just before I leased the place, and they couldn’t get the stains out from that), and although I love cooking, I refuse to invite people over for dinner these days if they have to eat on their laps. It’s just not right.
I do love having a completely separate office with a door (rather than a den that is more open) but I’d be willing to give that up if I had a larger living space.
I’ve looked around, and although the leases have come down a fair amount in the year and a half since I moved, it’s just not worth moving to the same sized space just to get hardwood in the same price range.
So, I’m considering a roommate situation again. I really enjoy living with someone else, and with the combined rent, a much nicer place could be attained for pretty much the same rent as I’m paying now, or maybe even a bit less than what I’m paying now… Especially considering the shared utilities.
One acquaintance has said they’re looking for a roommate as well, but we have only discussed the opportunity at a cursory level so far.
We’ll see! smile brite c washington d

I also dislike the cheap carpets in my place, the previous tenant had cats. Eww.
Good luck if you do decide to move. Having a roommate can be a lot of fun providing that it is someone you can stand to live with. It certainly helps financially and if you can find a better space that you are going to be happy and excited about, then you should go for it.

Sounds like you’ve got a similar amount of space to me, my “dining table” is a wooden plank that got removed from the back of my pooter desk cos it got in the way of the pooter I tried to put in there.
I have more cooperative carpets though, they started out pretty consistent with the colour of dust
And the evidence from me finding out I shouldn’t juggle orange cartons seems to have gone
Good luck finding something good for the move
It is good to be able to close the front door and shut the world away for a while but it’s also good to be able to have a natter to someone.

Roommates suck.
Well who can argue with that kind of logic Scotty?
Anyway, dare I say it… but have you thought about getting out of downtown? You have a car so mobility isn’t an issue.
Look in Kits or the Main St. area. I think you may find a new neighbourhood with more realistic living conditions while maintaining a great atmosphere just what you need.

Hey guys… thanks for your thoughts. (except for Scotty
)
@shnewt: In fact, I’m headed to see this place tonight — http://www.mybcrental.com/listings/school3280m/index.html (to take on my own, unless I find someone who’s awesome to live with) The only thing is, it’s totally out of the way. Granted, near skytrain, but still… I don’t want to become a homebody, either. We’ll see.

Hukay… Ya, that house looks nice, but I don’t like the neighbourhood, and it’s too far away from downtown. (I drove by it at lunch)
So, that confirms it for me — I want to stay near downtown. I love where I live (the neighbourhood, not the suite). I’ll keep lookin’!

I found someone with so much potential, but alas he might have issues:

LOL!!! How did I know you’d pull something like THAT out of the woodwork.
Thanks for the laugh!
With two cats and a dog … plus I’m messy … I could never have white carpets.
Gord and I loved Yaletown when we visited Vancouver a couple years ago. We had fun at the brewery.

Hi T.
It’s been a while since I left you a note but I’ve been reading your stuff…
Anyway, the roommate thing is a lot over rated. I had one for a while but decided that I’m a bit too independent to have another person with an opinion in my house. I guess I’m happy with just Charlie living here. He’s always happy with what I decide as long as there’s a milkbone in it for him.
See ya!!

you only become a homebody if you want to be one. i know i don’t go out as much as i used to but i don’t think it is because i left downtown. and being an 8 min walk from a skytrain that can have me downtown in 3 stops makes everything convenient. I don’t think commerical is your thing, but i would totally suggest checking out north main or even cambie, then it is a short taxi, bus ride in to town. or even a drunken walk home
