Be GONE, ghetto kitchen!

I’m done. I can’t take it anymore…

The kitchen is falling apart, and I have NO room for even my glasses.

Ikea has a sale on, so I’m going to take advantage! Be gone, ghetto kitchen! Good riddance!

I think I’m going to go with a color similar to this:

Ikea kitchen

Do you know someone who purchased an Ikea kitchen? Thoughts?

Looks like a beautiful kitchen. i don’t have an ikea kitchen but i’ve heard they are good quality for the money. My friend just rebuilt his heritage house and the kitchen is all Ikea cabinetry and counter tops.

We did (at our old condo). It was awesome! I’ll send you some pics of the transformation. :-D

  • Thanks guys :) I really like that color, too. That’s def. what I’m going with (Obviously, that is my opinion, but I think Barry will like it, too)

B, that would be awesome if you have time, thanks!

Go Ikea. I have one. Easy to install, smart layouts, good quality. Way better than anything of comparable price from Home Depot etc. Good luck!

I was visiting a friend’s new kitchen just last Friday and it’s Ikea. It’s not unlike the one you’ve chosen and it looks fabulous. I wouldn’t hesitate if I were you. I think that it will look fantastic.

    Have fun with the reno.

Lovely!!!! Ikea kitchens are pretty good for the price, my bro is a cabinet maker & he even approves which is amazing…!

Can I give you a tip tho’, I’m sure you know all about the lovely strata stuff but as a former strata bldg manager(ugh I can’t believe I ever did that)- make sure you find out the rules & regs for renos- esp if you need strata permission for making changes(sounds silly when you own the place but believe me it’s worth checking into it) and if you are planning to move/alter any plumbing- most newer bldgs have alarms on the plumbing lines so if anything goes awry(lines cut into/etc.) it sets the whole bldg off with fire alarms & everything gets auto-shut-down-ed- believe me- not fun and potential fines if that’s part of your strata’s rules & regs…. :)

My daughter did her kitchen all Ikea, and it is beautiful. If you choose Ikea, it is Ikea all the way because their stuff only fits with their stuff. She is very happy with it. She returned and repurchased stuff as she went along and Ikea was very easy to deal with.

I have recently been in two condos over $600,000 that I commented on how great looking the kitchens were and was amazed after to find out they were both IKEA kitchens. Very nice. I think their quality has increased in the past few years.

Hey Tanya, just thought I’d let you know that before we sold our townhouse, we gutted our kitchen and did it all with an Ikea Kitchen. We loved it! IT was easy to assemble the cabinets, and the staff there were a great help with getting the layout sorted out. I think they might even have the online kitchen design program that we used to help us visualize our kitchen. It helps if can have exact measurements to put into the program so you get a more accurate view of what will fit into your own kitchen. It was a fun project, but Lots and lots of work. They do have people who install the kitchens for you too I think. But that’s my 2 cents. I love the kitchen you choose btw. Have fun. Take advantage of the kitchen sale.. you can’t lose. :)

I whole heartedly agree with Cynthia.

As much as I hate to say thing, you need to check with the strata. If you are going into common walls (which you are..) you may be asked to get city permits. Hello headaches!

Mind you, if you aren’t touching the existing plumbing or electrical, you may not have to. Still, talk to the strata. You don’t want them shutting you down while you are half way through.

  • Thanks for the input, all! I’ve already initiated strata approval process (and already have approval for another part of the project) — I will not be changing any of the plumbing/electrical, so no permits are needed to change out cabinets. (I’m not even sure they need to approve cabinets, but I’ll let them know anyhow)

    :)

    Oh, and they’ll be professionally installed — that’s a given — I don’t want anyone hurting themselves.

  • As suspected, I just heard from my building property manager — no need for approval as long as I’m not changing the plumbing location (which I’m not). YAY! Full steam ahead on the kitchen reno! :)

  • Sounds so good that your personalizing your kitchen that’s the most important part of your home as what you serve your guest relates directly to your deep feelings about them.

Have fun and enjoy the kitchen looked fabulous the color is warm and inviting and Ikea has a great reputation.

I saw this posting last week and thought yes get the Ikea kitchen, then my husband pointed out this article in the Globe to me yesterday and I don’t think I can shop at Ikea again:
    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/just-dont-ask-why-its-so-cheap/article1223954/

Don’t want to rain on your parade, but it sure is cause for pause.

  • Thanks for all the positive feedback, guys…

@Michelle – Wow. That definitely does give me pause. …Thank you so much for pointing out the article. I’ll have to do some more research. That said, I’ll be honest, Ikea (unfortunately) seems to be the only viable option for me, and not getting a usable kitchen is not an option. If I could find a reasonable, local company that could do a similar job for a similar price, I would happily use them. Unfortunately, the quotes that I’ve gotten are over three times the price of the Ikea option.

But, I will put more of an effort into considering options. It brings up a great point, and one I’ve been now inspired to write a separate blog topic on. Thanks again.
