Renewed inspiration

I find, when I need to “reset”, I go looking for someone to mentor.

Weird, huh? It seems backwards, I know… I seek out someone who’s a little unfocused in their career goals or unclear on their career path, and I help them see the light.

And, as I help someone else through hurdles, I find myself incredibly invigorated and rejuvenated. The excitement from the person I’m mentoring is incredibly inspiring for me. I love seeing that light click on above their head when they realize there are usually some easy solutions to career issues.

Now, I’m no Jennifer Priest — I’m not a personal coach at all… I’ll leave that stuff in her extremely capable hands. I just love to inspire people to meet professional goals, or be an understanding ear through a career change.

What do you do, when you need a reset or inspiration in your life?

Funny enough, I follow the same process, although I do not actively seek someone to mentor. I just try to help with whatever I can!

I’m with you: mentoring, coaching, facilitating, helping folks in whatever capacity makes sense for them…that reinforces my belief in the goodness of the world.

I used to lead a rather large tech support team, and have remained friends with many of my former colleagues over the years. This week, she pinged me with a career-type question, and while en route to a meeting in Toronto (bless Via Rail and the BlackBerry!) I bounced ideas back and forth with her.

By the time we were finished our mobile e-mail huddle, she sent me one final message that I’ll probably print and frame. Not that I ever do any of this for recognition, but I was incredibly touched that she took the time to thank me as she did.

Life’s good. Thanks for the reminder, Tanya.

I find doing the same thing also helps me. I’m always trying to help out when possible. Funny thing: you got to be careful, as some people are opposed to getting help. Me? I welcome it, as I’m always trying to learn from others.

Of course, a nice hot soy chai latte also helps!
