Looking for a good movie? DON’T see “The Brothers Bloom”

Brothers Bloom MovieWe were over at the always-entertaining-and-fun-Bart’s place last night for a movie night… And we all agreed on The Brothers Bloom – the cast looked great… Rachel Weisz, Adrien Brody, Mark Ruffalo, and a one legged cat! Not to mention, one of my favourite narrators, Ricky Jay, (who also narrated Magnolia) started off the narration of this movie.

It looked very promising for the first 2 minutes. How can you go wrong with a one legged cat, and Ricky Jay’s commentary?

Except, then the cat disappeared, the actors grew up, the narration dropped off, and the swindling began. Only, it was us viewers they actually swindled. Poor Bart had to pay for the rental, after all. And, that’s two hours we’ll never get back.

The story was beyond predictable, dumb, and overacted. We all joked that the director must have taken a vacation after directing the first scene or two. There was no direction after that.

So, two thumbs way down on this one.

Your turn: Have you seen a really bad, or better yet, a really great movie lately?

The bad: got around to seeing “the Secrets of My Success” with Michael J. Fox, yeah, it’s an oldie but I had never gotten around to seeing it in 1988. Wow, cheezy, not cheezy good but cheezy bad….eckkkk…

The good: Soylent Green with Charlton Heston, from his post-apocalyptic movie period. About a cop in the future where we have depleted most of our natural resources..so $150 for a jar of strawberry jam and no showers. Soylent green are food rations of crackers made from a sea plankton, and no-one can get enough of them. I liked this film, it was a bit different and I like movies from the 70s and Charlton Heston :-) But I’ll never look at a green cracker the same way again.

That movie was so horrid – if you all had liked it & had not let me complain straight through it, I wouldn’t have survived.

Really good – Becoming Jane, with Anne Hathaway and James McElroy…wow just a great period film with the likes of Maggie Smith and Julie Walters in supporting roles.

Really bad – Titanic. Now I know I’ll foster some disagreement here. But it was a B-movie with great effects!

  • I am really looking forward to seeing “Becoming Jane” thanks for reminding me about that movie!

And, I totally agree with you about Titanic, Colette!

I liked the Brother’s Bloom, so did the person I saw it with in the theatre. I’m not going to defend it, it wasn’t THAT good, and it was long enough ago I don’t remember a lot of specifics except I enjoyed the characters. You didn’t even crack a small grin at Rinko Kikuchi’s character blowing stuff up?

If you want a bad movie with wasted actors I nominate Legion.

For a good movie how about this Oscar nominated short: Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty: http://www.grannyogrimm.com/#/the-film

  • It’s on TMN … it didn’t interest me so I haven’t watched it.
