My weightloss progess last week… A moderate fail.

Tanya Calgary blogger weight loss blog post*Sigh* – This wasn’t an awesome week, insofar as my weight loss progress, I’m afraid. At just under a pound down, I guess it’s better than a gain on the scale, but I really need to maintain two pounds a week in order to achieve my two goals in time – 165 lbs by May 1st, and 155 by June 15. Thankfully, I’m still just barely on track.

My biggest challenge this week was my food choices. As we were enjoying the BMO suite at the Saddledome last week, I was bombarded by all the drink, deep fried finger food, and desserts my heart desired. And desire it did… thankfully, I held myself to five chicken fingers, two glasses of red wine (even though I’d already enjoyed a couple of glasses wine just a few days before), two cubes of cheese (an absolute no-no for me), and two small dessert squares. What annoyed me about my choices the most, wasn’t that I had a lot, but rather, that I couldn’t keep the number down to a taste or two – or in the case of dessert, one.

Next time I’m faced with a similar situation, I’m going to eat good food beforehand, rather than hope that there will be options available that will fit into my calorie cap.

Aw, well. I’m chalking last week up to a moderate fail, and moving on to the week ahead.

How about you? Did you have successes last week with your lifestyle changes?

  • Tanya, looks like you are doing just FINE! Eating a big healthy salad before an event like that is a great idea though. I bet you could drop 4 lbs this week if you really worked at it. Keep it up!

So, I lost 60 lbs once bubyt following a pretty strict low-carb diet. Here’s a bit of advice based on my experiences:

Red wine is fairly low carb, so a glass every once and a while is ok. But I wouldn’t do more than one glass an evening. Your body prefers alcohol to other fuel sources, so while you have alcohol in your system your fat loss will go to 0. Only when the alcohol is processed will fat loss pick up again. Also, too much wine at once will spike insulin, and the body cannot hormonally break down fat when insulin is high.

I don’t think cheese is very bad for you. An ounce or two a day won’t hurt your weight loss. Anything breaded is pretty bad from a weight loss perspective as it’ll spike insulin, so breaded wings or fingers probably threw a wrench in it.

Good news is if it were only a few days ago, you’re probably holding onto a bit of water weight. Also, not sure what time of the month it is :) but most women gain a few pounds of water weight during that time due to increased estrogen levels.

    Keep up the good work!

That looks like success to me! Even when watching shows like the biggest loser where they are in the gym all day and have nothing but healthy choices presented to them all week (minus temptation challenges), you still see people have weeks where they don’t lose or barely lose… your body will make up for it! Even with the stuff you ate this week “outside” of your plan, that stuff doesn’t equate to another pound. Sounds like your body is just adjusting and it will make up for it!

Tanya, I always cave. Oddly enough I haven’t gained any weight in ages. I must be burning it off via stress with school.

I lost weight and was really into the approach — for about 4 months… then it just sort of dissipated, and I regained the weight.
IMHO these are two separate issues. If you are dealing with depression and self-image problems, then spending time with a competent therapist can be invaluable. If you are dealing with weight and fitness issues, spending time with a competent nutritionist or trainer is likewise invaluable.
Eating is not an emotional issue, per se. It is an inappropriate choice as a response to stress (and studies show that it is probably an effective one, which makes things harder.) Dealing with emotional or spiritual issues will make you a happier person, but it may not change how you eat.
I would rate myself as a 9 on the happiness/emotional/spiritually-content scale, but still need to log my food and step on a scale, and kick myself to the fitness center, if I want to keep my weight down.
If the book helps folks get their emotional/spiritual lives together, that is a wonderful thing. For most of us, getting to and maintaining a healthy weight is going to require other tools besides, and for that, thank you Tanya!

When you can still lose some weight on a week when you slipped a little is great.

Weight is one thing but be sure to keep track of your measurements. AS your body composition changes from eating better and exercising you may not see changes on the scale but you can still drop a dress size or two. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress! Congrats on success so far :)

  • I only lost .6 this week too, Tanya. I think this is a tough time of year to lose — not only does society NOT help (didn’t have quite the temptation you did but there are ALWAYS cookies and chocolates out on the kitchen counter at work. really irritates me) but also with these temperatures I think something pretty primal goes on re: particular craving for carbs.

but …despite the tough weeks, I’ll keep moving forward if you will! :)
